William RYAN was born about 1807 in Ireland. He immigrated to the United States about 1820. In 1829, He married Mary RYAN, widow of John RYAN, in Lewiston Pennsylvania. He and his family moved to Cumberland in Allegany County sometime in the early 1830ís where he remained until the late 1840ís when he moved to Iowa. His obituary states he had extensive business interests in Cumberland Maryland but suffered losses as the result of the failure of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Company. I would appreciate any information or leads on William.

Looking for information relating to Patrick MATHEWS who is enumerated on the 1850 census in Cumberland: occupation: innkeeper, born Ireland 1809. He is married to Ellen COLVIN MATHEWS and they have four children: Ellen, Rebecca, and John Colvin and Patrick MATHEWS (born 1848 in Cumberland). He and Ellen were married in Wash. Co. in 1846. Patrick made a declaration of intent to become a US citizen in Cumberland in Nov 1843 and was naturalized in Cumberland in 1846. Their son Patrick was baptised at St. Patricks Catholic Church. I believe both parents were dead by 1853 as their son Patrick, age 7, is found living with relatives in NYC in 1855. I am especially keen to know which Inn Patrick "kept" and whether there are any records of deaths from (the cholera edpidemic of) 1853.
