The starting point for most Gorsuch family genealogy is a series of installments published in the Virginia Historical Magazine from 1916 through 1918 The Gorsuch and Lovelace Families by J. H. Pleasants. This major Genealogy on the Gorsuch family is the foundation for the family group sheets that are provided in this presentation, along with various other records including early census records, marriage licenses, and church records. The primary focus of this site is the descendants of Charles GORSUCH and Sarah Cole. Charles with his sibbling came to Virginia and than Maryland, after their father was murdered during the English Civil War.
Like many Baltimore County families, there are a lot of broken links in current Gorsuch research. For instance there are a number of Gorsuchs living near Cockeysville in the mid 1800s that have not yet been linked to Charles and Sarah. The family also migrated in the same pattern as many other families in Baltimore County, with a migration to western Pennsylavania in the late 1700s (particularly Huntingdon Co.,) then into the West Virginia Panhandle and eventually into Ohio. There are are a few who probably went down the Ohio River to Kentucky, where Gorsuchs settled in Mason Co. KY, with other Baltimore County families. At present, the links for many of the Gorsuchs in Pennslyvania back to Charles Gorsuch are not certain.
This update corrects some errors in an early posting and adds considerably more material. Searching the internet, has shown there is some erroneous data in various material posted on the net, that can readily be disproved with census records, although with many persons of the same name and approximate age, it is easy to see how a person was linked to the wrong family.
