Mr. Charles E. MONTAGUE, one of the First district's best known citizens, passed away on Sunday afternoon (25JUN1909), after an illness of a few days, aged about 55 years. Death resulted from rheumatism of the heart. Mr. MONTAGUE had been sexton of the M. E. Church for several years and will be greatly missed from his accustomed place. He was a good husband and father to his wife and children and a friend to the whole community. He is survived by a widow and five children, Mrs. James MELVIN, Ms. Alice MONTAGUE, and Alda MONTAGUE, of Henderson; Mrs. Charles CARTWRIGHT, of Wilmington, and Mrs. Devolson CARTWRIGHT, of Goldsboro. The funeral service was held Tuesday afternoon at the M. E. Church, of which he was a member, by the Rev, Ivanhoe WILLIS and Camp '35 P.O.S. of A. of which he was one of the charter members. Marvin Earl Fortney Sr., 76
HARTLY - Marvin Earl Fortney Sr. of Hartly died Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2002, in his granddaughter's home, Georgetown. He was 76.
Mr. Fortney was born Nov. 22, 1925, in Burrsville, son of the late George Dewey Fortney and Florence K. Morgan Fortney. He moved to Hartly in 1958 after living in Greensboro, Md. and Templeville, Md.
He retired in 1989 after 25 years as a manager of Driver Improvement for the State of Delaware, Division of Motor Vehicle. Before working for the state he was a farmer as well as worked for Tyler/Wilson Refrigeration in Smyrna.
Mr. Fortney loved gardening and flowers and enjoyed sharing his flowers and vegetables. He also enjoyed bird watching especially hummingbirds.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two sisters, Florence Casper and Ruth Jones.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Anna Marie Lane Fortney; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Marvin E. Jr. and Sue Fortney of Hartly, Raymond Fortney of Dover, and Henry D. and Jenny Fortney of Hartly; two daughters and sons-in-law, Naomi and Rudy Spinka and Kathy and Lloyd Stackhouse, all of Hartly; two brothers, Bob Fortney of Marydel and George Fortney of Farmington; three sisters, May Cropp, Emma Price, and Shirley Towers, all of Harrington; 11 grandchildren, Michele R. Cathell of Georgetown, Nicole Slaughter of Wyoming, Matthew Slaughter of Camden, Joe Adams and Chris Adams, both of Hartly, Marvin E. Fortney III of Aberdeen, Md., Ted Fortney of Felton, Sabrina Vetter of Camden, Kristina M. Fortney of Dover, and Henry Fortney II and Brooke Fortney, both of Hartly; nine great-grandchildren, Megan Grace Cathell of Georgetown, Anthony M. Slaughter and Nicholas B. Mrs. Lane was born in Milford, daughter of the late John P. and Margaret Hammond Smoot.
She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Lane was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed her family, reading, and needlepoint.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Merritt Lane; three children and their spouses, Peggy and William Garey of Harrington, Linda and Neil Geise of Milford and Merritt Lane Jr. and Linda Lane of Pittsville, Md.; two sisters, Alice Black of Milford and Nora Tucker of Carlisle, Ohio; seven grandchildren, Randi Smack, Susan Cropper, Merritt D. Lane, Aston Garey, Rebecca Garey, Dewane Geise and Melissa Geise; and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be 7 p.m. Saturday at Berry-Short Funeral Home, 119 N.W. Front St., Milford.
