Family Remembrance Week

The idea for setting aside a special time for celebrating the importance of our ancestors' values and their many
contributions - for visiting and cleaning up family burial ground and for having family reunions and activities to
honor our heritage - was first proposed in 1993 by Mr. Atwood Barwick, a long-time Marylander and a charter
member of the Coalition.  By Proclamation of the Governor, Family Remembrance Week has been observed in
Maryland since 1993, during the last week of May.  Upon receipt of the Proclamation from the Governor's Office,
the members try to have displayed a copy in public places including county office buildings, local historical and genealogical societies, and public libraries. The Proclamation this year reads as follows:

The State of Maryland
Proclamation
From the Governor the State of Maryland
Family Remembrance Week
May 23-31, 2005

Whereas,  It is essential that we continue a conscious and concerted effort in remembrance and reverence of our
cherished roots and the contributions of our families; and

Whereas,  It is an educational experience for the young people of Maryland to explore their family ties, and to learn
about their ancestors and important family events; and

Whereas,  This special week seeks to pay tribute to the importance of family remembrance in the lives of people,
  and will feature family reunions, special religious services and community activities to promote this concept;
  and

Whereas,  Maryland is proud to join with the Coalition to Protect Maryland Burial Site in celebrating the importance of
family ties and family heritages, as keeping the spirit of the past alive will greatly benefit our families in the
                  future.
