My name is Fred Tutman and I am President of the Patuxent River Civic Association which is involved in historic preservation activities in the former town of Queen Anne (located on the border of PG and Anne Arundel Counties).
I was referred to you by the Prince George's County Historic
Preservation
Division. One of our current restoration efforts involves Mount Nebo
Church
which was established here in 1925. There is considerable concern in
the
neighborhood that the cemetery has been allowed to deteriorate. The
original
chapel is undergoing renovation but the congregation long since has
moved
elsewhere and the neighborhood has been transitioning from rural to
suburban.
Older residents have moved away or passed on, so the cemetery has been
neglected. There is also some indication that the plats conveyed
to nearby landowners may have included burial sites. In other words
the boundaries of the cemetery may actually run beyond the official
recorded
plat and onto lands current slated for subdivision. We have heard
of ground seeking radar equipment that might help resolve the matter
but
also have no actual experience restoring or maintaining an ancient
graveyard.

Final Resting Place for Major Thomas Lancaster Lansdale, Revolutionary War Hero
An article about the final resting place for Revolutionary War hero Major Thomas Lancaster Lansdale appeared in The Bowie Blade-News (front page) on Thursday, March 15, 2001 under the headline “City digs in over grave property matter”. Another article appeared in the Star Community News (page A-6) (publication date unknown) with the headline “Revolutionary War grave marker awaits mall land transfer”. The two articles discuss the existing problems with marking Major Lansdale’s grave.
The markers, yes, there are 2, do not mark Lansdale’s final resting place at this time. The original gravestone is in storage at a museum in the District of Columbia and a replica is in a warehouse in Bowie according to the Star Community News article. Evidently, the original grave marker had been vandalized about 20 years ago. The pieces were collected and deposited at the Anderson House, home of the Society of the Cincinnati, an organization of officers of the Continental Army that was formed at the conclusion of the Revolutionary War. Major Lansdale had been a member of this organization. In 1997 a replica marker was completed and has been waiting in a warehouse. The City is ready to place the marker at the grave but the developer/owner of the land has yet to turn over the property to the City for the placement. In addition to the problem with the land the Bowie Department of Public Works is not entirely sure where the stone should be placed.
The final resting-place for Major Lansdale is planned to be part of a 1.5-acre memorial park located near the new Bowie Town Center. A memorial park is certainly fitting for a Revolutionary War Hero. We can only hope that the City of Bowie and the owners of the land can complete their agreements and the grave can be located and marked.

Forest Hills Memorial Gardens
Forest Hills is back in the news. The grounds are not being maintained and families don't know exactly where their loved ones are buried. Families are angry and are asking Prince George's County officials to step in and assist them. The article written by Nurith C.
