Confederate Decoration Day

April 18, 2009

WHEREAS: Our country is a nation of people united by a common history of individual heritage and diverse cultures and the City of Frederick is rich in the history of the War Between the States; and

WHEREAS: The State of Maryland has long cherished her Confederate history and the great leaders who made sacrifices on behalf of the Confederate cause; and

WHEREAS: The E.V. White Chapter #1360, United Daughters of the Confederacy is dedicated to honoring the memory of those who served and died in service to the Confederate States of America and educating the general public on Confederate history; and

WHEREAS: Confederate Decoration Day has long been celebrated in the City of Frederick as the day to pay homage to the Southern soldiers who are buried and/or honored in Mount Olivet Cemetery with their annual floral tribute; and

WHEREAS: The month of April bears special significance since it marks both the beginning and the end of the War Between the States.

NOW, THEREFORE I, Mayor William J. Holtzinger, Mayor of the City of Frederick, Maryland, do hereby proclaim April 18, 2009, as "Confederate Decoration Day" in the City of Frederick and encourage all residents to increase their knowledge of the role played by the Confederate States of America in our country's history.
