MADDUX, NEWBOLD posted by Cree Newbold on Sunday, November 11, 2001 Would like to exchange information with anyone who has performed research on the MADDUX surname relating to the Lazarus MADDUX who died in Somerset County in 1735, leaving a will making mention of his wife Margaret and a number of children, including a Thomas and an Alexander. Reason: Ruth Dryden, in her book abstracting land transactions by tract name, on p. 312-313, lists over 60 different records for a property known as or related to "Newtown". The MADDUX name is very prominent in this abstract, beginning with a mention of a mention of an Alexander MADDUX buying land from a John KIBBLE in 1695, and ending with a mention of an Elzey MADDUX of Somerset County in 1799. My principal interest in this is that Thomas MADDUX, son of Lazarus, is called on 5 separate occasions by Dryden, first in 1759, and last in 1795 per his will, as Thomas NEWBOLD MADDUX. There are a couple mentions of NEWBOLD individuals in these pages as well: two of Thomas NEWBOLD [1759 & 1760] and one of John NEWBOLD [1760]. From other records, John NEWBOLD is associated with the "Newtown" property, which is, according to a map provided in the Dryden book, adjacent to properties known to have been owned by NEWBOLDs from 1678 into the 1770s. If Thomas NEWBOLD MADDUX was his true full name, it would suggest a close tie to the NEWBOLD family by the MADDUX family, perhaps by marriage. Thomas' father Lazarus, per his Will, had a wife named Margaret. Was she one of Thomas NEWBOLD's daughters, Margaret, as named in his Will of 1713? Enough of my wild speculations -- here's hoping someone in this forum might have a few more bits of information related to this possible connection. Thanks!
My ancester, John WAINWRIGHT, moved to York County VA from Somerset County in the early 1800s. I have seen his name spelled both WAINWRIGHT and WINNWRIGHT. I am wanting to know if anyone has any information of him or his family.
I am looking for infomation of my ancester Charles HOPKINS. He moved from Somerset County to Fox Hill in Elizabeth City County VA, then to York County VA in the early 1800s. He seems to have been part of a large migration of families from Somerset to York County.
Peter Adolphus HUDSON was married to Margaret. He was born April 30,1870, she was born March 20, 1872, and both are buried at Rehobeth Cemetery . They had a cannery and ran a general store at Hudson's Corner near Marion.

I am interested in the ALEXANDER and GLOVER families who lived in Somerset County in colonial times. Especially if you know of any who migrated to northern Virginia before about 1800. One Thomas Alexander was in Alexandria (if perhaps only briefly) in 1802. He was somehow involved in iron making. These two families were probably related before 1800 and moved on to the Shenandoah Valley.

James TOWNSEND reports in his Rev War Pension App that he was born in Accomack, Somerset Co., MD in 1754. Am searching for his parents. He married Catherine ALLEN; died in Meigs Co., Ohio in 1840. I have much information on this line after it gets to Ohio and am happy to share.
