SALISBURY CEMETERY

Veteran CemTrekker Jill Pevear has been at it again! This time, she's providing a listing of the headstone data found at the Salisbury Cemetery, located on Commerce Street, south of Route 50 (Salisbury Parkway). We're grateful for your generous nature, Jill!

Here's what Jill has to say about this cemetery: "Salisbury Cemetery, located between Rte 50 and Commerce St in Salisbury is a study in contrasts. The cemetery is easily accessible (just park at Arbyís) and the grounds are well-kept. The stones are another story. Many are broken, half buried in the ground, or lying completely face-down. Also, there were about 5 or 6 depressions in the ground with no stones at all. The stones that were still standing were extremely hard to read. I had to rely heavily on John Jacobís book to fill in the blanks. The cemetery is located on both sides of the street. I only had time to finish one side because I was due at Hughes Family Reunion meeting (held at Arbyís). I hope to do the other side the next time I visit my Mother. My comments will be in single parens ( ). Information that I got from Jacobís book will be in double parens (( ))."

Ed. note: Jill did complete the transcription of the graves on the other side of the street. Please see the Houston Cemetery listing. It now appears that the other side may actually be a completely different cemetery. The 1877 Eastern Shore Atlas contains a map of Salisbury which clearly shows a single larger cemetery divided into 2 sections. The larger section is labeled simply as "cemetery", and the smaller section as "cold cem." I do not know whether this division coincides with the way the two grave areas are apparantly currently divided by Commerce Street.
