        Questions & Answers
      • Have you in your possessions or had you at the time of the deceased of George W. PATRICK any notes, money, goods or chattels or bonds or other property of any description belonging to the estate of George W. PATRICK late of Lisbon, Maine and if so what did it consist of?
      • Ans.: I do not know that I had.
      • Did George W. PATRICK leave his chest in your dwelling home when he left to go to Canada?
      • Ans: He did.
      • When that chest was called for by Silas C. BICKFORD were you at home?
      • Ans: Silas C. BICKFORD never called for the chest to my knowledge.
      • Who did call for the chest & who took it from your house?
      • I do not know that one called for the chest. Charles PATRICK & Silas BICKFORD took it from my house.
      • Did you at the time the chest was taken from your house or at any other time examine or see the articles or property the chest contained?
      • Ans: I did.
      • What articles or property was there in the chest?
      • Ans: There was a silver watch. There was one note in his account book against me which I gave him when he started for Canada. Amount of principal of the note was forty dollars & thirty four cents. I think I am not certain as to the odd cents payable at my house without interest, there was his best wearing apparel. I think it was his best. There was a new drab brown hat. There was an account book. There even were some letters that my daughter wrote him. I believe there were a few lead types.
(lead types, might mean tintypes, which was an early forms of photography, It is called ferrotype which is a positive photograph made directly on an iron plate varnished with a thin sensitized film. Also called tintype.)

I do not recollect of anything else.

      • Who brot (sic) the key to your home to unlock the chest & who unlocked it?
      • Ans: Silas BICKFORD brought the key to me. I do not know who unlocked the trunk.
      • Did you at the time the chest was unlocked have in your hands the note and watch you speak of or either of them?
      • Ans: I saw them. I do not know that I had the note or watch in my hands, Whatever I had to do with the chest, I did for my daughter who had the care of it. As I was looking over the things in the chest it is probable I had them in my hands but can not say certainly. I do not know that chest had been opened prior to that time, this was in June 1854 when he left late in the Fall prior.
      • What became of the note & watch you speak of?
      • Ans: I do not know but presume they are in my daughters possession. I know no doubt of it.
      • Did you hand the note & watch to your daughter after they were taken from the chest?
      • Ans: I did not. She was not in the chamber at the time the chest was unlocked. Charles PATRICK, the brother of the deceased called at my house in company with Silas BICKFORD & wished to know there of George's effects. I told he (George Patrick) had left his chest here in care (of) Lecta (TOBIE), my daughter. He wished to see what was in the chest. I called on her & she wished me to open it. I do not recollect who turned the key. After we found what the contents of the chest was Charles PATRICK after I stated to him that Lecta (TOBIE) by a gift of George PATRICK when he left before a witness that if he did not return she was to have the whole chest & contents. Charles PATRICK then exprefsed wish before me for the apparel & made a proposition. I told him I would see what Lecta (TOBIE) said about it. I was acting for her. He (Charles Patrick) stated that if she would consent to give up the wearing apparel, then he would let her keep the note & watch. She said she was willing to give it up provided he would present it as a gift to George's mother. He promised so to do, & she gave it up taking a receipt for the same.

      • How old is your daughter & does she live in your family or not?
      • Ans: My daughter is in her 18th year and resides in my family.
      • Did you at the time the chest was open go down stairs & request Lecta to go up and see what she would have out of the chest?
      • Ans: I do not know that I ever gave her any advise upon the subject.
      • Did you ever talk with Lecta against her having anything to do with George W. Patrick?
      • I think, I have admonish her against being too intimate with George W. Patrick, that was while he was at work with me in 1853.
The answers to the interrogation proposed to him (Erza TOBIE) being made & subscribed by the said Ezra TOBIE.
