How good of you to inquire about the James Dutton Family. I had the very devil of a
time finding where Eliza Balch Dutton originated. She is my wife's great, great
grandmother and was listed in family papers as having come from Lubec. I found
the James Duttons by checking the courthouse in Ellsworth and the very next document
is her sister's adoption. In checking with Readfield records, I only found two
children - Ruth(1802) and Elizabeth(1803).
The girls had an aunt named Ruth Dutton (1783-1846) and of course
their grandmother was Ruth Edwards Dutton who died in 1802.
According to my records, the father, James Dutton died 2/10/1804 in
Readfield. I would like to know how he died. Also, the mother, Betsey
Ford Dutton died prior to the adoptions in 1807 and I need a date and location.
I would also like to know which Ford clan Betsey belongs to, if you have that
information. I do have photostat copies of the adoption papers from Ellsworth.
Notes on Ruth Dutton (1802)
Guardianship of this child was assigned to John Godfrey, attorney at law, Hampton,
Hancock County, Maine on July 8, 1807. John Godfrey was husband of her aunt, Sophia
Dutton. Her sister, Eliza, was assigned to Horatio Balch on the same date. Horatio
Balch was married to another aunt, Rhoda Dutton.
Notes on Eliza Balch Dutton (1803-1844)
Cemetery holds only four well marked graves. House has burned down. Farm is on
west side of highway toward the bottom of the north side of Cooper Hill. East
Machais Congregational Church record says she was the adopted daughter of Hon H. G.
Balch. Horatio Balch was married to Rhoda Dutton who was a sister of her father and
the aunt of Eliza. Birth is noted in the Readfield town clerk's book.
Document of Guardianship in Ellsworth, Maine court house shows her to be signed
over to Horatio Balch (with $1000 guarantee bond) on July 8, 1807 and on the same
day her sister, Ruth, was assigned over to attorney, John Godfrey who was married
to Sophia Dutton, a sister of Rhoda and James.
Married by Soloman Adams per Vital Records from the Eastport Sentinal Vol 8 # 52 -
12 Aug 1826 page - Page 76
Eliza is buried in the Cooper Homestead yard, in Cooper, which is north of Machais.
I hope this information is of help.
