FORWARD

This History is the fourth in a series of histories on Androscoggin County towns. The first was on Lewiston, Maine originally written by Janus Granville Elder, the second was the History of Greene, ME by Walter Lindley Mower. The third was the HIstory of Leeds, Maine. Our objective is to give the history of Webster, ME and record the early families of Webster and Lisbon which were both originally part of West Bowdoinham Plantation. Only a portion of the vital records of these towns still exist. To track down those who settled in that area we used the 1790 Census and as many additional sources as we could find. We have attempted to give sources whenever we can,as we realized when first approaching this formidable task, that we would proba-bly make some errors and incorrect assumptions. In our opinion anyone using this information should double check the sources we have listed. The histories of Lewiston & Greene did not contain all the early families listed in the 1790 Census, so we have added most of those families that were missed to this publica-tion. This work contains more than just WASP settlers. It was our goal to compile records of everyone, born before 1850, who lived in Webster or Lisbon. These guidelines allowed us to include some of the early Germans, Russians, Austria-Hungarians, Czechs, Slovaks, Bohemians, African-Americans, and French/English Canadi-an families who settled in Webster/Lisbon before 1900. Work done by the late Hon Benjamin Dole Bryent Jr Esq of Webster and the late Rachel T Cox of Lisbon formed the basis for this book. We would like to thank Mr Bryent's family for supplying us with his notes. We therefore dedicate this book in memory of Benjamin Dole Bryent Esq 1815-1887 Rachel Townsend Cox (1887-1966).
