Charles Loring Dickey and (Effie) Etta (Estes) Dickey
My great-grandparents were Charles Loring Dickey (1858 - 1942) and (Effie) Etta (Estes) Dickey,(1866 - 1950). They were both from Clinton
and were married on Aug. 18, 1881 in Clinton by Everett Hammons, Esq.
They moved from Clinton to Canaan during the winter of 1889-1890 and had
a sixty acre farm on what is now known as the Old Dickey Road. When they
moved to Canaan they already had eight children. Following the move they
had fourteen more children. A list of all the children is as follows:

The children attended the Ramsdell school on the corner of the Pease Rd. and Salisbury Rd., then later the Brock school. The family sold blueberries, butter, eggs and wood to supplement what they couldn't
raise themselves on the farm. Charles and Etta moved from Canaan to
Fairfield in the spring of 1935 but several of their children including
their sons Merritt and Charlie called Canaan home for the rest of their
days.
