 (The following is a transcript of a Civil War Soldier’s Memorial poster from 1863.  The original is located at the Canaan Public Library.) 

Company B 13th Regiment
Maine Vol. Infantry.

Soldier’s Memorial

This company was recruited at Fairfield and Canaan, Somerset Counties, Maine, and went into rendezvous at Camp Beaufort, Augusta, Me., Nov. 14, 1861.  Left Camp Beaufort en route for Ship Island, Miss., Feb. 18, 1862.  Embarked on steamship Mississippi, in Boston Harbor, Feb. 20, and sailed for Ship Island on the 21st, at 12 M.  Touched at Fortress Monroe and took on board Gen. Butler and Staff; encountered a heavy gale on the night of the 26th and 27th off Cape Hatteras; 28th ran aground on Frying Pan Shoals, off Wilmington, aground from 9 A.M., till 6 P.M., springing a leak, meanwhile.  Arrived at Port Royal, S.C., March 2d; repaired damages and stayed there one week when we again sailed for Ship Island on the steamer Matanzas.  Arrived at Ship Island March 21st; endured the burning sun of a hot climate, doing garrison and fatigue duty till July 11th, then ordered to Fort St. Philip, La.; went via New Orleans; arrived at the Fort, July 14th, 1862;  did garrison duty till August 24th, 1863.  Were then ordered to New Orleans, where the Regiment is now doing provost duty, under Provost Marshall Gen. Bowen.
