The 1790 federal census
Up 1900 1870 1860 1850 1840 1830 1820 1810 1800 1790

The nation's first census was little more than a headcount.  Enumerators asked the full name of only the head of each family.  Other persons were listed by their age at the time of the census.  Two copies of the tabulation were supposed to be posted in a public place for people to examine and correct.  No standardized forms were published for enumerators.  They weren't even provided with paper for the survey by the federal government.

Today's Newry was listed as "Sudbury Canada Settlement" in York county, a part of Massachusetts in the 1790 census.

As the microfilm of the 1790 census is difficult to read, the figures below were taken from a book published in 1908 and compared with the original on microfilm. Two columns of information from this census are not transcribed here because there were no entries made in Sudbury Canada Settlement for the categories.  Missing here are the "all other free persons" and "slaves" categories.

While Sudbury Canada Settlement was a part of York County, Massachusetts at the time, many libraries today file its returns under the "Maine" heading. Most larger libraries have at least the earliest U.S. census films available for patron viewing.  They can also be viewed at LDS local family history centers go to the LDS website for more information on how to obtain them.  The returns for Sudbury Canada Settlement for 1790 are found on National Archives Census microfilm in series M637, roll 2, page: 132.
