The 1840 federal census

The 1840 census continued the practice begun in the census ten years earlier of asking numerous questions about family members' occupations and status.  Unfortunately, in Newry no entries were made in the blocks asking about attendance at school and those who were blind, unable to speak, insane or otherwise disabled.  Perhaps no one cared to share such information with the enumerator, perhaps it was an early indication of sensitivity on the part of the enumerator that these facts weren't gathered.  We will probably never know.

This census asked also about the names and age of Revolutionary war pensioners and Newry returns show a few such patriots were still alive and living in the area.

As is the case for several other census transcriptions on this website, if no response was made to a question in the Newry community, the column for that question is not shown below in order to save space.
