1850 federal census

Up 1900 1870 1860 1850 1840 1830 1820 1810 1800 1790

The 1850 federal census has often been called the first "modern" census because of the standardization and improvement of survey techniques that started with this survey and continued in future years.  Not only were enumerators given printed instructions that resulted in greater accuracy, they were required by law to inquire at every dwelling and with every family, something that had not always been done in the past.  The inclusion of so much personal information for the first time in this census makes it very helpful to genealogists, allowing identification of families and other groups by name.  The listing of birthplaces for every individual helps trace migration patterns.

Newry's 1850 census returns are fairly readable on microfilm.  The one major difficulty in transcribing them was reading the penmanship of Mr. Olson who evidently took great pride in his embellishments of capital letters.  The result is that it is often hard to distinguish middle initials.  His "B's", "P's" and "R's", for example, often look very similar.  But the tables below are intended to reproduce the format and content of Newry's returns fairly accurately.  As always, if the exact spelling of a name or other information is important to you, it is best to view the microfilmed returns yourself through borrowing them from the National Archives or the local LDS Family History Centers.

Newry's 1850 federal census returns are found on National Archives microfilm series M432, roll 262, page: 239.

Notes:

  •  Obscured or illegible letters and words in the census returns are denoted by "?" symbols.

  •  Columns for a page are only shown if there are notations for that column on that page of the original returns.  No notations are made on any page for the column labeled as "color", for example.  So the "color" column is not shown on any page of the transcription below.

  •  An age of less than one year is denoted by a fraction in the age column, thus "7/12" indicates a seven-month old child.

--Mitch Barker
