| Powers cemetery was established around 1816 following two years of laying out and contracting for the land, according to "Newry Profiles 1805-1980" by Paula Wight. It was one of two cemeteries established for the community around this time, this one on the Sunday River, the other (Wight cemetery) on the Bear River. The committee that was chosen to deal with this cemetery consisted of Capt. Isaac Powers, James Beatty and Jonathan Smith, according to Wight's book. | |
