Young, Erma Thurston. Yesterday and today,
Publisher Manchester, Me. a Dirigo edition, c 1953. A girl's
memories of growing up in Newry. It has few place or person names
but provides a fascinating word-picture of what it was like to live
along the Bear River in the late 1800-early 1900's when finding a doctor
was a major ordeal and a shiny dime in the Christmas stocking was a
child's dream of heaven. Available at the Maine Historical
Society library in Portland and may be found at other libraries or
through your local library's interlibrary loan program.

Bethel Historical Society's museum and research library off the town square in Bethel has an extensive collection of records related to Newry and its settlement. You may wish to write the museum with your research requests if you are unable to visit it in person. But by all means, plan to spend a day or two in the Society's library if you are going to be near Newry.
