Sunday River cemetery is located about one mile past the cut-off to Sunday River Ski Area, just before reaching the Artist Bridge over the Sunday River.

Get a map from  Small USGS icon and to USGS Home Page and .  A new window will open and a red cross will mark Sunday River cemetery.  Change map size and scale to view the surrounding area if desired.  Increasing the scale (25,000; 50,000; 100,000 etc.) will add more viewable territory but decrease the detail that can be made out.  It might be better for orientation purposes to increase the scale only one notch and then use the arrows to move in various directions.

Burials in Sunday River Cemetery: These records were published in the Boston Evening Transcript from October 11, 1937 to November 4, 1937: "(They were) copied from 'The Sunday River Cemetery' in Newry, Maine by  B.P.W. (BPW was Mrs. Benson (Martha A. Fifield) Perley Wilkins, a distant cousin of mine. Her book, Sunday River Sketches, was published in 1977." -- Randy Bennett of the Bethel Historical Society.

Magill to Williamson
Here is another version of the Sunday River cemetery transcriptions. It differs from Randy Bennett's contribution above. You might want to check both versions just to make sure you don't miss anything. If you find a difference between the two versions we can't vouch for which one is right, that's just how it goes. There's nothing precise about reading and interpreting old letters and numbers. The passing years and styles of writing make things difficult to pin down exactly.

We would be grateful to receive more photos of headstones at Sunday River cemetery that can be posted here.  Please contact Mitch, the webmaster for this page, if you can help.
