WHEELER WOOD, 1914-2015
- Ruth Wheeler Wood, 100, of Waterville, passed away at her home on
Saturday, Feb. 21, 2015.
was born in Oakland, Maine on June 8, 1914, the daughter of the late
Dean E. and Ethel (Howe) Wheeler. She attended Oakland public schools,
Colby College, and the School of Library Service at Columbia University.
She held library positions at Iowa State College in Ames, Iowa,
Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH, and the Maine State Library in
and her husband, Elmore L. Wood were residents of Augusta from 1946 to
1990, and while there were members of South Parish Congregational
Church. After retirement they spent several years with winters in
Florida, and summers at their camp on Salmon Lake in Oakland.
1998, she has lived at Park Residences in Waterville, and belonged to
First Congregational Church. She was an active member of the Oakland
Area Historical Society.
is survived by a son, Donald W. Wood of Enfield, Conn., a daughter, Jean
M. Rose of Lowell, Maine; six grandchildren, Jonathan Rose, Eric Rose,
Andrew Wood and partner Cara Moore, Rebecca Shelton and husband James,
Jeremy Wood and Matthew Wood; a great-grandchild, Milo Wood; and several
nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her brother Alfred H. Wheeler
of Oakland, Maine.
graveside service will be held in the spring at Pine Grove Cemetery in
