Biographical Sketch Found in Wheeler's History of Castine, Penobscot, and Brooksville, Maine.

PERKINS, JOSEPH

Mr. Joseph Perkins was born September 8, 1745, in York, Maine, and died in Castine, August 20, 1818. He married Phebe Ware. She was born in York, September 10, 1749, and died in this town, August 2, 1815. They had eleven children.

Mr. Perkins was one of the wealthy men of the town at that period, and was more engaged in commerce and navigation than any other individual. He owned at one time eight thousand feet of wharf property. He was a very prominent man and his name appears in the early town records more frequently, perhaps, than that of any other citizen. He was chairman of the first board of Selectmen, chosen by the town of Penobscot. He died in this town, August 20, 1818, aged seventy-one years, ten months and one day.
