1784 List of Penobscot Settlers

This list is a partial transcription of an item originally printed in the March 1983 Maine Historical Magazine, volume 8, pages 55-7. This list was reprinted in the December, 1983 issue of Downeast Ancestry. The information was contributed to Downeast Ancestry by Robert Carver Brooks. Mr. Brooks writes:

"The order in which the names were presented appears to start at the Orland/Penobscot town line, proceeding down the Penobscot River to the neck to Castine (Samuel Mathews), then (omitting the Bagaduce penisula [sic]) north to, and circling, Northern Bay, then south down the eastern sides of the bay and down Bagaduce River to the (then) Penobscot/Naskeag line (the old line is the present Blue Hill/Penobscot town line extended southwesterly until it intersects Penobscot Bay at Bucks Harbor) then (Giles Johnson) northerly up the west side of Bagaduce River, then southerly following the river around Cape Rosier to Bucks Harbor (Malachi Orcutt). The last several names appear to be on Bagaduce Penisula [sic]."

I have included only the "name of the person now living on the lot" (present settler) and "Name of the person who first settled on the lot" (original settler) columns. The information was originally recorded on 13 July 1784.
