Civil War Tax Lists

First, it's a good idea to review the following articles:

• National Archives Prologue Magazine -- An excellent article explaining the taxes levied.

• Introduction -- The word-for-word introduction from the NARA microfilm M770.

Not all of the information on the Civil War lists has been transcribed. To see the entire record for Hancock County, order microfilm M770 - Internal Revenue Assessment Lists for Maine, 1862-1866, Roll number 13. The introduction states that additional lists for Hancock County are found on rolls 14 and 15, but I haven't yet examined those reels.

Although the title says these are "Alphabetical Lists," they are not strictly in alpha order. (For example, ALLEN comes before ABBOTT.) Be sure to use the FIND or SEARCH function of your browser to search the lists.

Here is what is available on Reel Number 13, M770. Note: I have posted data ONLY pertaining to Division 8, which includes the towns of Brooklin, Brooksville, Castine, Deer Isle, Penobscot, and Sedgwick.
