1861 - 1865
The Town of Peru furnished 115 of her sons as soldiers during the Civil War, 30 of whom were either killed in action, or died while in the service of their country.

Capt. Daniel Hall was the Commanding Officer of the Peru Militia, under Col. Thomas J. Demerritt during the War.   The enlistment and mustering point for the men in the area, was at the railroad station at Gilbertville, in Canton.

The following are the Regiments and Names of the brave young men from Peru that served and died during the Civil War

First Maine Calvalry

This Regiment was mustered in at Augusta on October 31, 1861, to serve 3 years.   They departed Maine on March 14, 1862, and arrived at Washington, DC on the 19th.   The original members of the Regiment were mustered out of service at Augusta on Nov 25, 1864, and those that re-enlisted, mustered out at Petersburg, Va., on August 1, 1865, arriving back at Augusta on the 9th, where the men were paid and finally discharged.

Co G.   Promoted to Cpl. 1 Jan 1863.   Taken prisoner at Brandy Station 9 Jun 1863, escaped and rejoined his company 26 Oct 1863.   He re-enlisted 1 Jan 1864 and was promoted to Sgt. on 14 Jan 1865, and mustered out on 1 Aug 1865.   Brother to George and Capt.   2. Child, Homer,   farmer, age 22, single, born Peru, enlisted 31 Oct 1861 and sent to Augusta for training, Pvt. Co G.   Promoted to Cpl. on 28 Oct 1862.   Wounded in action at Aldie, Va. 17 Jun 1863.   Mustered out on 25 Nov 1864.
  3. Hall, James G. B.,   farmer, age 19, single, born Peru, enlisted 31 Oct 1861 and sent to Augusta for training, Pvt. Co G.   Discharged June of 1862 for disability.
  4. Hayford, Orlando A.,   farmer, age 23, married, born Peru, enlisted 31 Oct 1861 and sent to Augusta for training, Pvt. Co G.   Severely wounded in action at Shepardstown, Va. 16 Jul 1863, and remained in the Army Hospital at Baltimore, MD, until he mustered out on 25 Nov 1864, the end of his 3 year service.   He died in 1884 from the results of those wounds.
  5. McIntire, Henry S.,   farmer, age 37, married, born Peru, enlisted 31 Oct 1861 and sent to Augusta for training, Cpl. Co G.   Promoted to Q/Master Sgt. on 16 Dec 1861, and mustered out on 25 Nov 1864.
  6. Roberts, Albert J.,   farmer, age 20, enlisted 31 Oct 1861 and sent to Augusta for training, Pvt. Co G.   He was captured 10 Jun 1864, released by the emeny and rejoined his company on 28 Aug 1864.   Wounded in action at Boydton plank road, Va. on 27 Oct 1864, and mustered out 1 Aug 1865.
  7. Smith, Benjamin S.,   farmer, age 18, born Peru, mustered 15 Jul 1862, Pvt. Co G.   Was discharged for disability on 25 Feb 1863, and died of the same on 24 Dec 1864.
  8. lst Maine Regiment of Volunteers

    This Regiment was organized on April 28, 1861, to serve for 3 months, and mustered at Portland on May 3, 1861.   On June 1, 1861, the Regiment left for Washington, DC, where it camped out on Meridian Hill.   Where it remained in the performance of necessary guard duty until August 1st, when it was sent home, and mustered out at Portland on August 5, 1861.

  10. Walton, Henry B.,   age 30, born Peru, married. He served his 3 months with Co. C., and re-enlisted at Portland November 11, 1861 as a Lt. in Co D., 12th Maine, later he transfered to Co E. He didn't mustered out with his company, but remain in the field, re-enlisting 1 Jan 1864 and assigned to the 12th Maine Battalion Regiment Infantry, and was killed at battle of Cedar Creek, Va. 19 Oct 1864.
  11. Walton, Benjamin F.,   age 22, born Peru, Pvt. Co. E., mustered out at Portland on August 5, 1861. Re-enlisted and mustered 14 Aug 1862, Pvt., Co D., 16th Maine Regiment of Volunteers.   Discharged for disability, 23 Mar 1863
  12. 2nd Maine Regiment of Volunteers

    This Regiment was organized at Bangor in May 1861, sent to Willett's Point, NY, where they were mustered into service on 28 May 1861, to serve for 2 years.     Upon the expired term of service, they were sent back to Bangor, and mustered out of service on 4 Jun 1863.

  14. 3rd Maine Regiment of Volunteers

    This Regiment was organized at Augusta on June 4, 1861, to serve 3 years. They arrived at Washington DC on the 7th. and on the 14th, they left Washington to participated in the First Battle of Bull Run.

    Engagements:

    On June 4, 1864, their term of service ended, and they were sent back to Augusta, where they mustered out of service on June 28, 1864.

    This Regiment was organized at Portland and mustered on November 20, 1861, to serve 3 years.     Left Maine for Lowell, Ma., on the 24th, then to Boston on December 30th, and from Boston, January 2, 1862, they embarked on the Steamer "Constitution" for Ship Island, MS, arriving there on February 12, 1862.

    The orginal members of the Regiment left the front November 19, 1864, and were sent back to Portland, where they mustered out of service on December 7, 1864.     The new recruits and those that had re-enlisted, remained in the field, and soon were organized into the Battalion Twelfth Regiment Infantry.     Ordered to Savannah, Ga., on January 3, 1865, and saw duty there until the Regiment mustered out of service on April 18, 1866.

    The rest of the Regiment moved on to New York , February 21st, and from there embark February 27th on Steamer "Fulton" for Ship Island, MS, arriving there March 8th.

    Organized at Portland and mustered on August 29, 1862. Left Maine for Alexandria, Va., on September 3rd. Attached to 1st Brigade, 1st Division, 5th Army Corps, Army on the Potomac, till October, 1862, and than assigned to the 3rd Brigade, 1st Division, 5th Army Corps, till July, 1865.

    Engagements:

    Was at the surrender of Gen. Lee and his army. March back to Washington, D.C., arriving on May 12th. Regular members of the Regiment mustered out June 4th, and the Regiment mustered out of service on July 16, 1865.

  103. 21st Maine Regiment of Volunteers

    Organized at Augusta and mustered in for 9 months' service on October 14, 1862.   Left Maine for Washington, D.C., October 21st.   Upon reaching Trenton, N.J., they were ordered to return to New York, and did duty at East New York until January of 1863.

    The Regiment than embarked for New Orleans, La., on January 9th. on the Steamer "Onward," reaching New Orleans on the January 31st, and removed to Baton Rouge, La., on February 3rd.   Here they were attached to the 1st Brigade, 1st Division, 19th Army Corps, Dept. of the Gulf, until ordered home July 24, 1863, where the Regiment was mustered out of service on August 25, 1863.
