"...Reuben Brainerd was a professional hunter. He built his cabin on the shore of the pond, but did not immediately take up lots & begin clearing as was the custom for pioneers. His purpose was to gather harvests of furs from the unexplored banks of the 
Cobbossee-conte rather than corn..."

He was the first white child to be born at Cushnoc within the present limits of Augusta. He moved to Readfield with his father in 1771. Served in Revolutionary War. Elias, Jr. was a Calvanist Baptist minister, and the first pastor of the South Church, Rockwood Corner, Belgrade.

A surveyor of Highways. He built a grist mill on Lyon Brook, a southernly tributary of Bond Brook on  Prescott Rd. in 1784. The mill fell to decay, and according to one family historian, he & wife separated in 1816. At that time he went to live with his son in Waterville where he died.

Apparantly Squire was a man of unusual strenghth since the Lyon Genealogy tells a story of Squire wrestling with a 400 pound black bear, which he managed to kill with his hunting knife. Also, of him carrying two bushels of corn on his shoulders to the grist mill in Winthrop before his brother Alpheus built one in Manchester..
