MARTIN:
Am looking for information relative to my GGGgrandmother Betsey MARTIN of St. George. According to " The History and Genealogy of Morrill Maine" by Robinson, Morse and White and the "History of the Town of Union Maine" by Sibley my GGGgrandfather, Jonathan DAGGETT, married Betsey Martin of St. George around 1804. But that is all that is ever said about her. LEWIS: I am
looking for information on George LEWIS, born c 1750 who was said to be living
in St. George, ME before the Revolutionary War. He married Dorcas LAMBERT
(daughter of Sherebiah Lambert of Canaan, Me) 4-25-1773 and lived in Canaan, ME
after the war. Here is a quote about George Lewis from In the book "Soldiers,
Sailors, and Patriots of the Revolutionary War---Maine" on p. 466. is listed:
LEWIS, George MA, resided before service in St. George, and he was under both
Capt. Langdon's Co., and Capt McAllister's co. After the service he resided in
Canaan, 1790. Also they list him as being in "Soldiers and Sailors of the
Plantation of Lower St. Georges, Maine, Who Served in the War for Independence."
Any information or clues on the ancestry of this man would be appreciated.
Thanks! Susan Johanson

I was in Morrill a short while ago and stopped at the Penobscot Marine Museum there and found some handwriiten notes that indicated that Betsey's parents MAY HAVE come from Marblehead MA. If so her father may have been Richard Martin and her mother Hannah CRUFF. They had a daughter Betsey baptised Nov 13, 1785 which would make her the right age for an 1805 wedding. I have access to the Marblehead records so that much I know but I don't know if this is the correct St. George Betsey Martin. I know from records obtained at Penobscot that there were Richard Martins in St. George at this time.
Thank you very much for putting your time into our histories. I've only spent 2 years doing my family and it takes a lot of work and dedication.

Bill Wing sent along the following "Thank you" for the group's efforts on 13 September 2004.
Dick,
I think John Falla and I have successfully wrapped up the Betsey Martin ancestry issue. Thank you and your people for their assistance.

I'm printing the answer to
this question because it might be of interest to other St. George
researchers.
Thanks to some wonderful list members, I have found the
ancestry of George Lewis of St. George and Canaan, Me. I am posting the
information because it may help others make a connection. Apologies to those who
receive multiple mailings from the various lists to which this will be posted
From the Book "Soldiers and Sailors of the Plantation of Lower St.Georges,
Maine, Who Served in the War for Independence" Lewis George. He enlisted as a
private in Capt. Archibald McAlister's Co., Col. Samuel Mc Cobb's regiment, July
11, 1779 and served until Sept 24, 1779, on an expedition against Major
bagaduce. The payroll on file in the Massachusetts archives is endorced: "Regt.
at Penobacot" "George, Nathaniel, and William Lewis were probably brothers and
sons of Daniel Lewis who died in Cushing, May 28, 1794, in the 69th year of his
age. Daniel Lewis was the son of Yarley lewis who was born in Wales about 1680.
He was married April 28, 1702. John Lewis, son of Daniel, was born Sept. 18,
1863 and died April 19, 1838. He married Agnes Young, Jan 14, 1796, who died
June 20, 1848. In the winter of 1743, Gen Samuel Waldo entered into a written
agreement with Daniel and Charles lewis to convey to them two lots in Cushing,
each containing 100 acres, but being unable to perform the conditions of the
agreement, the Lewis brothers surrendered the agreement to Waldo. On June 20,
1746, Waldo extended the performance of the agreement for twelve months. On
April 17, 1777, Mrs Sarah James of Warren sold lot 35 to Daniel Lewis containing
100 acres, adjoining the lot sold to Lewis on the south." Thanks for all of the
help that I received!! I would love to hear about any connections to this Lewis
family. Susan

1939 Reunion I
have a lead pencil with: ST. GEORGE REUNION, MAY 6, 1939 printed on the side. It
was among some of my grandmother's items. Does anyone know what this reunion was
held to celebrate? Thanks,
I'm printing the answer to this question because it might be of
interest to other St. George researchers.
According to the Rockland
Courier-Gazette, May 13, 1939, issue, an article has the opening paragraph: "The
St. George Reunion had its third annual dinner at Hotel Continental, Harvard
Square, Cambridge, Mass., May 6, with 143 guests attending." I'm told that the
article has a list of those in attendance and their residence. For example, the
list included Mr. & Mrs. Lewis H. Watts, Somerville, Mass. (my
grandparents). This answer courtesy of John Falla.
