David Colby Young & Elizabeth Jane Keene originated this project in 1975, while attending University of Maine at Farmington. The purpose of the project was to index vital records from Maine newspapers to help genealogists, historians, lawyers, deeds researchers, and anyone interested in the study of family relationships.
In 1977, the first work completed was Selected Obituaries from the Kennebec Journal 1824-1855. Rebecca Burnham of the Maine Old Cemetery Association and local DAR chapter, with help from her husband, John Burnham, then Director of the Mantor Library at UMF, published the first book for NEONIP of Maine. About 75 copies were sold until the service was ended.
In the 1980's the Maine Genealogical Society reprinted the Kennebec Journal Obits in their journal. The second publication was, Index to Death Notices from Jenks' Portland Gazette 1798-1806 by David C Young, printed in 1983.
In1993, Vital Records from Maine Newspapers, 1785-1820, by David C Young and Elizabeth Keene Young was published by Heritage Books, Inc. The Maine Vital Records 1785-1820 is in its second printing.
In 1994, Marriage & Divorce Records from Freewill Baptist Publications 1819-1851 by David C. and Elizabeth Keene Young was published by Heritage Books, Inc and is nearly out of print.
In 1995, Marriage Notices from the Maine Farmer 1833-1852 by Elizabeth Keene Young and Benjamin Lewis Keene was published.
In Mar 1997, Abstracts of Death Notices 1833-1852 and Miscellaneous News Items from the Maine Farmer 1833-1924 by David C Young and Benjamin Lewis Keene will be released by Heritage Books, Inc.

David Colby Young,
I have been through the Calais Advertiser from 1836 - 1978 (this is available on microfilm) and have copies from 1988 to present. The 1978 - 1987 will have to be read from the originals. The paper has been poorly microfilmed - blurred, faint, etc., so it is taking a long time. The indexing is in many stages, but I do have about 20,000 entries on my computer. I am presently going through the Calais Advertiser the second time to pick up what vitals I have missed and to find more of the history aspect of it.
I am going to have it published myself as I am thinking of setting up a preservation fund for Calais with the proceeds coming from the Calais Cemetery (which is in progress), the Calais Advertiser, etc. It won't be much, but it will be a start. We need to generate some money in Calais to ensure that future preservation takes place.
Again could it be mentioned that the 1860-1870 Calais Advertisers are missing?
