GAMMON
I have been working on the GAMMON family for a little over a year and have searched every which way with no ancetstors found beyond what I will list.
The last GAMMON in my family was Lois Emmer GAMMON (5 Jan 1855 Portland ME - 1923 WI).  Her parents were William Whitney GAMMON (23 Apr 1812 Paris ME) and Phebe Ann CHAMBERLAIN (6 Apr 1823 Waterford ME).  William's parents were Moses GAMMON Jr (1780 Paris ME) and Abigail GOSS (1783 MA).  Moses Jr's parents were Moses GAMMON Sr (abt 1750 MA) and Silence.  I have no other information about her.  I know that Moses Sr was in the Revolutionary War and received a pension.  I am hoping to find Moses GAMMON Sr's parents and possibly the maiden name of his wife Silence.
Thank you for your time and help.

ESKILDSON / ESKILSON - MARSH - MITCHELL
William ESKILSON of Liverpool, England, was married, by Dummer Sewell, J.P., of Bath, Maine, 1 Jun 1794, to Miss Deborah MITCHELL, of Bath.  Circumstances imply a relationship to Christopher ESKILDSON, mariner, who married by license 26 Sep 1799, Church of St. Anne, Liverpool, England, Anne MARSH, a minor.  Jenks Portland Gazette, 4 Jun 1804, reported the death "in this town" of Miss Lydia ESKILDSON, aged 16.  For other Eskildsons, see query in The Maine Genealogist 24(Feb 2002):44.  I would like to exchange information on the Mitchell ancestry and any relationship of the various Eskildson Maine families.

MARY (SMITH) JONES BRAZIER
Trying to locate the gravesite of my great-great-grandmother.  I have been researching her for over two years and have thus far been unable to locate her gravesite through online research, personal visits and library research.  I am fairly certain she is buried in Cumberland County.
This is what I know.  My great-grandfather was William Howard Jones, b. 1861 in Windham, Maine to William Jones (b. about 1835 in Maine) and Mary Smith (b. about 1840 in Maine).  William Jones either died or abandoned the family between 1862 and 1866.  Mary Smith Jones remarried to Joseph Brazier in 1866 in Windham, Maine.  From this point the trail gets cold.
My mother remembers visiting her great-grandmother's gravesite with her grandfather William Howard Jones when she was a teenager and she is certain that it was in Cumberland County.  She remembers that there was a gravestone, but she has no idea of the name on the stone.  As you can see from the above, it could be Mary Smith, Mary Jones, Mary Brazier, or possibly some combination such as Mary Smith Jones, or Mary S. Brazier.  Or it could even be that she is buried under some other last name if Joseph Brazier died and she remarried yet again.
I believe that my great-great-grandmother died between 50 and 60 years of age making her death date between 1890 and 1900.
Is there any way I can determine her gravesite?  I do not mind searching data bases, town records, or other documentation.  About all I can be sure of is that her maiden name was Mary Smith (b. about 1840) and that she was from Windham, Maine.

JULIA ROSS, WIFE OF HENRY LUFKIN, OF RANGELEY, MAINE

i hope someone out there can help me. I am on a quest to find a picture of my grandmother, my father’s mother, who died when he was two. He doesn’t remember how she looked, and has never had a picture of her. She was a Ross from Rangeley, and I know that there are a number of Ross’s still there but I don’t know how to contact them. Her name was Julia Ross and she married Henry Lufkin.  I am hoping that someone might have a clear picture of her and would be willing to give it to us for my father’s sake. What would be even more terrific is if someone has a wedding portrait of the two of them. My father is in his 80’s now so you see there is a bit of a concern to find one soon. I have been looking for some time.

Thank you for any help you can give me on this.

GREELEY INSTITUTE

I have been in contact with Janet [Weymouth, MGS Vice-President] and many others in an effort to determine the parents and genealogy of my great-grandfather William Howard Jones.  From what I have been able to find out, he was born in 1861 in Maine.  The town of his birth (according to his death notice) appears to have been Windham, Maine, but as their vital records for the period are missing, I have been unable to determine his parents, grandparents, etc.  There is also a marriage record in Yarmouth Maine showing his marriage to my great-grandmother Jennie Groves.  This record indicates that he came from another town, not Windham, and there are no records for him there either.

My query centers on Greeley Institute.  It is my understanding from my grandmother (his daughter) that he graduated from Greeley sometime between 1871 and 1881.  I am trying to locate the graduation records of this school in the hopes that they might help me forward my search.  I have tried several sources including the Maine Historical Society, the Cumberland Historical Society, the Yarmouth Historical Society, and others.  All of these contacts proved fruitless.

I am hopeful that someone out there might know where these records are.

WARE

I’m looking for the ancestry of Lucinda R. WARE [possibly born 1821 Orrington, Penobscot, Maine and died 1888 Orrington, Penobscot, Maine] who married 31 Jul 1840 Isaac EVERETT, born 27 Nov 1812 in Dedham, Massachusetts to Joel EVERETT and Catherine SMITH.  I want the ancestry of the WARE/WEARE families Lucinda is from; I only know her father was Eben WARE, miller of Orrington.

I have the book “My Grandmother Carrie: Reflections on a Maine Life” written by Helen CREELEY POWER, the granddaughter of Carolyn Elizabeth EVERETT.  The book was published privately and there are only a few copies available.   Helen CREELEY’s brother was Robert CREELEY, the well-known American poet from Maine.  The book has vignettes of Carrie’s life, in which the author says Carrie used to take the ferry to visit her grandparents and that her grandfather was Eben WARE, miller of Orrington, page 32. Eben had a grain mill per page 41.  Carolyn Elizabeth EVERETT, also known as Carrie or Sis, was the daughter of Lucinda R. WARE (the miller’s daughter per the book, page 29) and Isaac Everett.

Carolyn (Carrie) EVERETT was born 4 Jul 1855 Hampden, Penobscot, Maine married Ira JULES 15 August 1872 in Bucksport, Hancock, Maine; and died 29 Nov 1937 Acton, Middlesex, Massachusetts.  I have a collection of information on the ancestry and descendants of the JULES/JULE family and am willing to share.

The data that I’ve found by perusing books available at the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution in Washington, D.C. is the following:

      E. WARE operated the first mills in Orrington, Maine about 1806, page 507 from the book “Records of Orrington Penobscot County, Maine Volume 5”

Eben WARE died 15 Feb 1837 leaving wife Matilda and four or more children born between 1825 and 1834, page 157.  Isaac Everett married Lucinda R. WARE in Hampden, ME 24 May 1840/31 July 1840, page 207.  Both of these pieces of data were from “Vital Records of Orrington Penobscot County, Maine prior to 1892”.  This cannot be Carrie’s grandfather as she wasn’t born until 1855; possibly this could be her great grandfather.

Matilda WARE [possibly Matilda ATWOOD who may have been married to Eben WARE] and children living in Hampden, ME January 23, 1841, page 115 from the book “Miscellaneous Records of Orrington Penobscot County, Maine 1798-1929 Volume 6”

Isaac WARE of Unity married Rachael ATWOOD of Hampden 21 September 1805 from “Vital Statistics – Hampden, Maine” by the Maine Daughters of the American Revolution.

Data found on the Internet, <www.geocities.com/heartland/9211/ware.htm> says a Josiah WARE of Maine had two sons who married ATWOOD daughters in the early 1800’s in Hampden, Penobscot, Maine.

SMITH

Can anyone identify which Samuel and Lucretia (SMITH) SMITH are my great-great-grandparents?

From my father's bible record, I have my SMITH forebears to my great-grandfather, Nathaniel SMITH, b. 6 Jun 1798, d. 14 Aug 1875.  Much of this is substantiated in MGS #28, VR of Biddeford prior to 1856; p. 184 lists Nathaniel to be the son of Samuel and Lucretia (SMITH) SMITH, m. 1791, p. 137.  Same publication lists three (3) Samuel SMITHS:  (1) son of John and Rebeckah SMITH, b. 7 Jun 1750, p. 43 & 45; (2) son of Theophilus & Olive (LIBBY) SMITH bp 07 Oct 1759, p. 77; and (3) son of Daniel & Susanna (HALEY) SMITH, bp. 19 Jun 1766, p. 83.  The first seems a bit old for a first marriage.  Also, same publication lists two (2) Lucretia SMITHs:  (1) dau. of Jonathan & Charity (HOOPER) SMITH, bp. 20 Jan 1760, p. 77; and (2) dau. of Samuel & Susanna (HALEY) SMITH, bp. 15 Nov 1761, p. 79.  My late brother had a Lucretia, b. 1 Jan 1763, d. 6 Jun 1829, but I have not found her in my searches.

The Maine Families in 1790, Vol. 7, p. 482-3, lists the Lucretia born to Jonathan & Charity SMITH as "poss" marrying the son of Theophilus & Olive SMITH.  P. 487-9 lists the Theophilus SMITH family and cites the possibility that their Samuel married either Molly STAPLES OR Lucretia.  Could Lucretia be his 2nd marriage?

Looking for Maine connection origin of James T. PIDGEON (1799/1800 - 11 Jan 1875). Family lore has his ancestors departing Long Island (NY) in the 1700s for Nova Scotia.  James T. is buried at Sag Harbor Long Island. His wife Nancy A. (1809 -10 Apr 1882) is also buried at Sag Harbor.

Unreferenced and unacknowledged postings exist for "James T. PIDGEON born 1799 NB" and "born 1800 near East Machias". These postings include seven children born to James T. and Nancy A., in Maine, between 1829 and 1840.

Their son Stephen (1829/30-1910) married Deborah ANNIS CHASE (22 Nov 1835 - 1893).  They are buried in Sag Harbor. The CHASE and ANNIS names were carried forward by their descendents.

The 1910 census for Sag Harbor gives a probable grandson James. T. PIDGEON born 1867.

Gould living in Freedom next door to Levi's brother Aaron and his wife Zoa (Whitney) Gould.  Also, the 1850 census shows the Henry Whitney family as a neighbor.  I believe Zoa, Abigail and Henry are possible siblings and possibly the children of Charles and Rachel Pattee Whitney.  Looking for proof.  Charles Whitney appears in 1800 at Twenty-five Mile Pond and 1810 at Jackson and in 1820, Thorndike.  Have not been able to document these two generations.

WARREN

We know from "An Historical Sketch of the Town of Deer Isle, Maine With Notice of Its Settlers and Early Inhabitants" [Hosmer, George L. 2nd ed. 1905, reprint 1983, pp 57-8] that Thomas Warren settled on what is known as Warren's or Freeze's Island, and he m. George Freeze's daughter Mary.  He had 3 children: Richard, William and Mary.  What we do not know by fate are Thomas Warren's parents.  He d. circa 1793 by drowning when he felled out of a log canoe, and after his death his widow m. Mr. William Ring. [ibid, p. 58].  Though Thomas Warren's name does not appear on Rufus Putman's List of Inhabitants on Deer Island by 16 Dec 1785, his signature appears on the invitation to Reverend Peter Powers to minister to the inhabitants of Deer Isle on 17 Sep 1785. ["Deer Isle, Maine from Pre-History to the Present"; Watts, Edith Spofford, July 1997, p. 197]. It could be that he was living with his father-in-law at the time and was counted with the family.  The census of 1790 lists only one Thomas Warren in the State of Maine. [1790 United States Federal Census, Maine, Hancock Co., Deer Isle; Roll M637_2; Page 27: (1) free white males over 16, (2) free white males under 16; (1) free white females]. His firstborn son, Richard, was b. 14 Mar 1786.   Based upon his wife's age and his son's birth date, we surmise that Thomas' birth ranges from 1750 to 1765.  Family folklore has him descended from Richard Warren, the pilgrim, but no such lineage can be found through the Warren surname.  There are Warren surnames listed in New Hampshire, Vermont and Massachusetts.  Benjamin Lake Noyes was searching without luck for any clues on his ancestry based upon his notes in the Deer Isle-Stonington Historical Society archives.  I am looking to break down this brick wall.

WEBB

My great-grandfather, George Dexter Webb (b. 14 May 1835), m. Margaret A. Elwell (b. abt 1834) on 17 Sep 1854 in Portland, Cumberland Co., Maine.   They had three children: Frederick Webb b. abt 1857; Mary E. Webb b. abt. 1859; and Rufus Webb b. May 1860 and d. in infancy.  George went off to the Civil War and returned to Portland in 1865. According to a document written by Nathan Webb, brother of George, it was believed Margaret was dead, however, there is no proof of this. Nathan also stated that Frederick and Mary lived to majority.  The 1860 census had a record of this family in Portland. No other information has been located concerning the two surviving children, Frederick and Mary. George emigrated to Nova Scotia and remarried there in 1874, having eight more children there.  Any information concerning what happened to this missing family would be appreciated.

DYKE

I have pinpointed my Civil War ancestor, Captain Cyrus Hamlin Dyke to the Jay, Maine, area (he lived in the part of Canton that ping-ponged back and forth between the two towns).  He belonged to GAR Kimble Post 38 (Livermore Falls) and is buried with a GAR marker and designation Captain in the Pleasant Hill Old Cemetery, Livermore Falls.  The GAR records for this post no longer exist.  He appears on the 1860 Canton, Maine, Federal census, and his oldest son, Cyrus Dana, is listed in Dalton's book on page 165 as one of those who do not appear on Adjutant's list, but served.  Search of the Maine Archives and the National Archives has not turned up his father, Captain Cyrus Hamlin Dyke, as the town of Jay is not recorded in these military reports.  Can anyone direct me to a source that I might find out Cyrus Hamlin Dyke's military record?  Or a verification that he served in some way?  Many thanks for any help that anyone can give!

Ezra Kimball 28 Mar 1776 in Wells, Maine, d. in Lyman, Maine, 10 Feb 1800.  Her baptism does not appear in the NEHGS Register, vol 75 & 76: Records of the first Church, Wells, although there seem to be very few recorded in 1751-1753, which would be a likely time for her.  In first church records children of John and Mary Cousins are bapt. 1734, 1736, 1738, 1745, 1746, 1748 and 1754; so she might fit in there.  Also, Thomas and Abigail had children bapt. there 1744/5, 1746/7, 1747/8 and 1749.  I looked in Maine Probate Abstracts, by John Frost, but did not see probates for this John or Thomas Cousins there.  Does anyone have any information which might help me confirm or exclude these possiblities?

I am trying to find the parents of Samuel Simmons who was b. in Maine (I believe either Camden or Rockport) in Mar 1814.  Hid death certificate indicates he was b. 26 Mar 1814, but we have a book on the Warren, Maine, town records and the author wrote to my mom and told her Samuel was a twin brother to George who was b. 12 Mar 1814.  We can find George's birth record, but not Samuel's.  Samuel was m. in 1844 to Sarah Hawes, dau. of Robert Hawes and Lydia Kalloch (dau. of Finley Kalloch and Elizabeth Gardner), and d. 6 Dec 1892 in Warren, Maine.  Children of Samuel and Sarah were: Sarah Jane (m. Mary Ann is my maternal grandfather's mother.  Any help would be most appreciated.

MERRILL

I've rescued an old photograph of Annie Elizabeth Merrill taken at the S. L. Preble Studio in Waterville, Maine, in 1894.  Annie appears to be in her 20s or 30s at the time the photograph was taken.  Based on limited research, I believe this may be a photograph of Annie E. Merrill, b. 1864 in Maine to parents, James F. and Angelette Merrill.  The family was included in the 1880 census of Pittston, Maine, including Annie and three brothers - Marcus T., Weston J., and Arthur Merrill, all b. in Maine between 1867-1877.  In addition to the photograph of Annie, I also recovered a photograph of Melville E. Freeman taken at the same studio.  I don't know if there is a connection, however, I mention it just in case it is a clue.  Merrill family researchers have also provided the following information:  If this is the right Annie, her lineage is: James F.(8), Enoch(7), John(6), Abel(5), John(4), Nathan(3), Abel(2), Nathaniel(1).  This Annie E., according to the Merrill Genealogy at the Maine State Library, m. George Carver.  We do not have a m. date or anything on her children.  She d. after 1930.  I'm hoping to locate someone from this Merrill family so that the photograph can be returned to its rightful place with family.  If you are a member of this family or know someone who might be, please contact me.  Thanks.

DWYER

My great-grandparents are John A. Dwyer, b.30 Nov 1842, and Mary Marco, b.23 Oct 1853 in Fairfield, Maine. I am trying to find their parents (John A. Dwyer's father was Charles Dwyer).

The children of John A. and Mary Marcou Dwyer are: Mary Audelle "Mame" Dwyer, b. 14 Feb 1876 in Richmond, Maine; Joseph Dwyer, b. 22 Aug 1877; Anna Laurance Dwyer (also known later as Sister Julian - nun in Catholic Church); Earnest P. Dwyer and a twin brother b. 30 Aug 1885 in Red Lake Falls, Minnesota; Ceciel Katherine Dwyer (my grandmother) b.13 Aug 1887.
In Memoriam" obituary information used to obtain birth, death, and marriage dates. See for further information. "She was really a remarkable woman, not only in sweet, rich maturity of character, but in mental attainments. Born in Fairfield, Maine October 23, 1853, she was married to John A. Dwyer at Richmond, Maine April 15, 1873. Seven years later she with her husband moved to Minneapolis and after a year they went to a frontier life in northern Minnesota at Red Lake Falls. In 1902 they moved to Missoula where they made their home until death claimed the devoted wife and mother early in the morning of April 19, 1912." Passed away peacefully while sleeping.  According to the memoriam..."eleven brothers and sisters survive her family of fourteen and five of her six children survive to mourn her death."
When Mary Marco passed away on 19 April 1912 in Missoula, Montana her obituary read that there were 14 brothers and sisters, eleven of who are living at this time. However, their names were not listed. I also know that Mary Marco worked at a broom factory and developed a mechanism to hold the broom handle and the device was later patented.
Thanks--

KINNEY

I am Raynor Cropley, a cousin of the late Basil Kinney. I understand that he was a member of the Maine Genealogical Society.  I have copies of 3 items he published (Kinney Nation, Weston Maine sesquicentennial Memorial (History of Weston), and Weston Maine Sesquicentennial Memorial Booke III (Baskahegan Families). I am related to him through his wife's grandmother, Mary (Weeks) Doherty.  Do you know of any other publications or papers that Basil produced in which I might find some more of my ancestral beginnings?

BURSLEY
Lemuel Bursley and his wife Lavinia Spencer, lived in Farmington, Maine, from about 1800 until their deaths in 1854 and 1858, respectively. I am looking for their parents. Both were b. in Massachusetts; almost assuredly in Barnstable County. They were m. 1797 in Provincetown. We have assumed that Lemuel was the son of Benjamin Bursley, b. 1752, and Elizabeth Goodspeed, b. 1757, because this is the only couple of the correct age. In addition, I have found a court case from 1802 involving a "Benjamin Bursley of Farmington". Is there anyone who would have information about the Bursleys or would be willing to do some research on this 1802 Farmington resident.
