Nancy Johnson Spofford

Eli Russell Spofford and Nancy Johnson Spofford

Charcoal Drawings donated by Pam Hinckley
The drawings were probably done by Lea R. Hussey, who was also a Bingham photographer. His name is on the back of one of the drawings.

Eli and Nancy Johnson Spofford were living in Brighton, Maine in 1860. By 1900, Nancy was living in the household of George and Vonie Gilman in the town of Bingham. Nancy was the daughter of Darenus Johnson, for whom Johnson Mountain (off the Mahoney Hill Road) is named. They were ancestors of the George Gilman family. See a brief genealogy here.

The Society's Sterling Collection also holds a 1892 diary kept by another ancestor of Darenus Johnson, one of the daughters of Lucy Butterfield Johnson and her husband, Caleb Currier Robinson. This brief diary contains entries related to the final illness of Caleb Robinson and mentions several other members of the family.
