    The following data is extracted from original and photo copied deeds, bonds, leases, etc. on file at the Windham Historical Society.  All spelling and punctuation per original document; including the use of the letter “f” for “s” [Exception-all SURNAMES have been written in CAPITAL letters.]  Many of the original documents have been transcribed for easier reading.  For a copy of any document, please contact the Historical Society; indicating the date, names and reference number or name at the end of each extract.  Also, please indicate if you are requesting a copy of the original document, copy of the transcription, or both.

     

    2 Sep 1794 -  Deed - Rec’d and recorded Cumberland Co Reg of Deeds 17 Sep 1794 Lib 21 Fol. 451 & 452.  Joseph HUTCHINFON, Yeoman of Windham sold to Paletiah and Ebenezer ALLEN, Yeomen of Windham for the sum of two hundred pounds eight shillings; 46 acres with barn and 1/8 part of a sawmill, all part of Lot No. 140 in Windham.  Others named-Elijah POPE, purchaser of the remainder of Lot No 140.  Signed/sealed Joseph HUTCHINSON and Rebekah “X” her mark HUTCHINFON, [wife of Joseph].  Witness signatures-David PURINTON and John ROBINFON.

    24 Apr 1826 - Mortgage Deed - Rec’d and recorded Cumberland Co Reg of Deeds 3 Apr 1827 Book 106 Pg 562.  Isaac MAYBERRY, Yeoman of Windham sold to Ebenezer ALLEN, Yeoman of Windham for the sum of $175 a piece of land in Lot No. [left blank on original] part of the second division of lots in Windham.  Isaac to pay the $175 plus interest to Ebenezer in one year from this date, than this deed which is also a note is void.  Others named-Ezekiel VARNEY, George WILLIS, and Thomas LITTLE.  Signed/sealed Iaac [sic] MAYBERRY.  Witness signatures-Ezekiel VARNEY and John EVELETH.  [Ref.     13 Dec 1827 - Silas FOGG, Yeoman of Windham sold to Stephen and Thomas MORRELL Jr., Yeomen of Windham for the sum of $800 the southerly half 50 acres more or less of Lot No 84 in the second division of lands in Windham; also part of Lot No 88, about 7 acres and 107 rods.  Others named-Thomas VARNEY, adjoining land owner.  Signed/sealed-Silas FOGG and Charity FOGG, [wife of Silas].  Witness Signatures-Isaac STEVENS and Jacob MORRELL Jr.  [Ref.     13 Dec 1827 - Stephen and Thomas MORRELL, Yeomen of Windham sold to Silas FOGG, Yeoman of Windham for the sum of $800; the southerly half 50 acres more or less of Lot No. 84 in the second division of lands in Windham; also part of Lot No 88, about 7 acres and 107 rods.  Provided Stephen & Thomas pay Silas or his heirs $800.  $400 in 4 months and $100 each year for 4 years then this deed which is also a note will be void.  Others named-Thomas VARNEY, adjoining land owner.  Signed/sealed-Stephen MORRELL and Thomas MORRELL Jr.  Witness Signatures-Isaac STEVENS and Jacob MORRELL Jr. [Ref.     4 Jun 1832 - William Lewis HALL, Yeoman of Windham sold to Thomas MORRELL Jr., Yeoman of Windham for the sum of $300 one half of Lot No 134, about 50 acres, being the easterly end of said lot in the second division of land in Windham.  Others named-William HALL [father of William Lewis HALL].  Signed/sealed-Wm.     16 Nov 1832 - [original document completely handwritten] - Thomas MORRELL Jr., Yeoman of Windham agrees to maintain Hanhah [sic], Mary Ann, Sarah & Benjamin MORRELL, minor children of Jacob MORRELL until they reach age 21.  He will pay each girl $40 for housinfurniture when merried.   Signed/sealed-Thomas MORRELL Jr.  Witness signatures-Elias BAKER and Jacob MORRELL Jr.

    15 Aug 1835 - Deed - Rec’d and recorded Cumberland Co. Reg of Deeds 15 Aug 1835 Book 142 Pg 525.  Daniel B. INGERSOLL Yeoman of Windham sold to Abraham A. INGERSOLL Yeoman of Windham for the sum of $100 and a Bond for my support Lot No 53 in the second division of land in Windham and the buildings thereon, also another parcel of about 8 acres with buildings.  Others named-John ELLIOTT, Levi KNIGHT, Amos MAYBERRY, Daniel HOBBS, Ezekiel MAYBERRY, John CRAGUE and Abraham ANDERSON, as neighboring land owners.  Signed/sealed Daniel B.     1 May 1850 - [Windham Hist. Soc. has only a partial copy of this deed] Benjamin M. BAKER, Gentleman of Windham sold to Thomas MORRILL, Yeoman of Windham for the sum of $225 about 30 acres in Lot No 191 of the second division of lands in Windham.  Benjamin to pay Thomas $100 on reasonable demand with interest, $100 with interest in one year and $25 with interest in two years than this deed which is also a note is void.  Others named-Elias BAKER; Josiah BAKER, deceased father of Elias; Wm.     4 May 1858 - [Windham Hist. Soc. has only a partial copy of this deed-date shown here is handwritten in pencil at top of partial copy]  Cumberland Co. Reg of Deeds Book 284 Pg 557.  Elias BAKER Esqr. of Windham sold to Thomas MORRELL, Yeoman of Windham for the sum of $230, about 46 acres of Lots No. 91 and 92 in the second division of lands in Windham.  Elias to pay Thomas the $230 in two years with interest annually, than this deed which is also a note is void.  Others named-William LEGROW, deceased.  [Ref.     8 Jun 1860 - Warranty Deed - Rec’d and recorded Cumberland Co Reg of Deeds 18 Apr 1868 Book 360 Pg 523.  Harrison SWIFT Yeoman of Windham sold to Henry SAYWARD, minor son of Elbridge SAYWARD of Windham for the sum of $20 a piece of land in Windham.  Signed/sealed Harrison SWIFT and Lucy SWIFT.  Witness signature Matilda L.     5 Sep 1863 - Warranty Deed - Rec’d and recorded Cumberland Co Reg of Deeds 2 Jan 1865 Book 333 Pg 45.  Samuel F. PRIDE of Westbrook sold to Darius LOWELL of Westbrook, for the sum of $250 about 20 acres of Lot No 29 in the second division of land in Windham.  Same premises conveyed by   Lemuel JONES to Urbane LOWELL and Joshua R.     13 Aug 1870 - Administrator’s Deed-Private Sale - Freeland A. STAPLES, Admin. of Estate of Henry SAYWARD, late of Windham sold to Theodore SAYWARD of Windham, for the sum of $20, ¼ acre grass land and one “Muck Bed”.  Others named-John A.     27 Sep 1873 - Warranty Deed - Rec’d and recorded Cumberland Co Reg of Deeds 27 Apr 1893 Book 601 Pg 261.  Roger MASON of Windham sold to Willard LAMB of Windham for the sum of $175, part of Lot No. 60 in the fourth division of land in Windham. Same lot conveyed by James STURGIS to Joseph COOK Cumberland Deed Book 285, Pg 300 and conveyed by COOK to MASON Cumberland Deed Book 354, Pg 155.  Signed/Sealed Roger MASON and Esther MASON [wife of Roger].  Witness signatures F.     28 Jun 1878 - Warranty Deed - Rec’d and recorded Cumberland Co Reg of Deeds 1 Jul 1878 Book 451 Pg 199.  Nathaniel ATKINS of Falmouth, ME sold to Albert N. SAYWARD of Windham for the sum of $1500 land and buildings being the homestead of the late Jonathan HANSON.  Same premises conveyed to ATKINS by Charles JONES, Admin. Estate of Jonathan HANSON Cumberland Deed Book 419 Pg 54.  Property subject to $300 mortgage which SAYWARD assumes.  Others named- Joseph HUSSEY, Mark JORDAN, S. H. STAPLES, Elbridge SAYWARD, J. H.     1 Jul 1878 - Mortgage Deed with foreclosure clause - Rec’d and recorded Cumberland Co Reg of Deeds 2 Jul 1878 Book 446 Pg 439.  Albert N. SAYWARD of Windham sold to Charles GALLISON of Westbrook, ME, for the sum of $1000 land with buildings in Windham-being homestead of Jonathan HANSON, deceased.  Same premises conveyed to Nathaniel ATKINS by Chas. JONES, Admin., Cumberland Deed Book 419 Pg 54. And same conveyed to SAYWARD by ATKINS Cumberland Deed Book 451 Pg 199.  SAYWARD has 2 yrs to pay GALLISON $1000 w/interest at 6% per annum; than Deed which is also a promissory note is void, otherwise remains in full force.  Signed/Sealed Albert N.     30 Mar 1880/81 - Warranty Deed - Rec’d and recorded Cumberland Co Reg of Deeds 30 Mar 1881 Book 475 Pg 297.  John BROWN of Windham, Annie M. JORDAN, Lizzie G. JORDAN and Fred J. BROWN of Portland, ME sold to Albert N. SAYWARD of Windham for the sum of $600 land with buildings in Windham.  Same conveyed by William GOULD to Meriam BROWN Cumberland Deed Book 290 Pg 69.  Not included in deed is the land under the barn, it being owned by another party. A stipulation of the deed is that the lot of land be fenced forever.  Deed subject to a mortgage to Wm. F. HALL, which SAYWARD assumes to pay.  Signed/sealed John BROWN, Lizzie G. JORDAN, Annie M. JORDAN and   Fred J. BROWN.  Witness signatures L. B. DEUMETT, Lillie GRAY and Henrietta G.     22 Sep 1881 - [Windham Hist. Soc. has only a partial copy of this deed.]  Margaret A.K. MOODY, wife of Dan’l F. MOODY of Deering sold to Eli STONE for the sum of $500 about 30 acres of land in Windham.  Others named-David MAINS, Lydia MORRILL, W.F.     22 Sep 1881 - [Windham Hist. Soc. has only a partial copy of this deed, date shown is written in pencil at top of partial copy]  Eli STONE of Windham sold to Margaret A.K. MOODY of Deering for the sum of $400 a parcel of land on the south east side of the road from Morrell’s Corner to Gray.  Same parcel sold to STONE by MOODY this date.  Stone to make four payments of $100 with interest for 4 years than this deed which is also a note is void.  [Ref.     27 Feb 1882 - Thomas VARNEY of Windham sold to Eli STONE of Windham for the sum of $100, a 15 acres parcel of land known as the ROBINSON lot; excepting and reserving all growth on premises except pine tops not suitable for sawing, said pine tops to pass to STONE by this deed.  Others named-Geo. W. WILLEY and Albert ROGERS, adjoining land owners; Thos.     3 Mar 1882 - Warranty Deed - Rec’d and recorded Cumberland Co Reg of Deeds 4 Mar 1882 Book 485 Pg 238.  Moses HUNT of Portland, ME sold to Albert N. SAYWARD of Windham, for the sum of $2300, 60 acres of land with buildings in Winndham.  Same premises conveyed to HUNT by Reuben ALLEN Cumberland Deed Book 386 Pg 236.  Others named-William BAKER, E. W. BERRY, and J. L. MORRILL as neighboring land owners.  Signed/Sealed Moses HUNT and Martha A. HUNT [wife of Moses].  Witness signature Frank G. STEVENS.  [Ref. #2000:56]

     

    5 May 1883 - Bond - Theadore SAYWARD of Windham is bound to Elbridge SAYWARD of Windham in the amount of $2000.  Conditions-Elbridge, this date conveyed to Theadore real estate in Windham estimated to be worth $2000 in consideration of which Theadore has agreed to “support and maintain the said Elbridge SAYWARD and his wife Mary SAYWARD during their lifetime and lifetime of the survivor.  If conditions met, this bond is void.  Signed/sealed Theadore SAYWARD.  Witness signature M. P. FRANK  [Transcriber note-Theadore’s signature has been crossed out on original document.  On front of document is written the following-however it too has been corssed out along with the signature] “Nov 5, 1895 - I hereby agree to assume and do hereby assume and agree to fulfil and perform the conditions and requirements of the within bond instead and place of Theadore SAYWARD the [illegible] and to hold him harmless from this time.  Signed Elbridge F.     5 May 1883 - Mortgage Deed - Rec’d and recorded Cumberland Co Reg of Deeds 5 May 1883 Book 493 Pg 340.  Theadore SAYWARD of Windham sold to Elbridge SAYWARD of Windham, for the sum of $2000, 67 acres of land and buildings in Windham.  Land is subject to a $350 mortgage to Henry PENNELL.  Same land deeded this date to Theadore by Elbridge.  Theadore, this date,  gave bond of $2000 to Elbridge.  If all conditions of said bond are met - maintenance & support of Elbridge & his wife Mary during their natural lives-than deed is void, otherwise shall remain in full force.  Signed/sealed Theadore SAYWARD.  Witness signatures M.     10 Dec 1883 - Mortgage Deed - Rec’d and recorded Cumberland Co Reg of Deeds 14 Dec 1883 Book 501 Pg 320.  Discharged 1 May 1884 signed Leander E. CRAM.  Albert N. SAYWARD of Windham sold to Henry B. WALKER of Westbrook, ME for the sum of $500, 60 acres of land with buildings in Windham.  Same premesis convey to SAYWARD by Moses HUNT 3 Mar 1882 Cumberland Deed Book 485 Pg 238.  SAYWARD has to pay WALKER, one year from this date, $500 plus interest at the rate of 8% per centum per annum, then deed, which is also a promissory note, is void, otherwise remains in full force.  Others named-William BAKER, E.     23 Apr 1884 - Lydia A. MORRELL, widow of Thomas MORRELL, of Windham leases to Eli STONE for one year in exchange he furnish her with all necessary food, clothing & medial aid; the estate willed to her by the late Thomas MORRELL including the use of all farming tools and stock now on the farm.

    18 Dec 1884 - Bond for Deed - Sarah K. MORRILL of Windham is bound to Albert N. SAYWOOD of Windham in the sum of $1200.  Conditions-Sarah shall convey to SAYWOOD as soon as proceedings in the Probate Court will warrant, two parcels of land in Windham and buildings thereon.  Being the same conveyed to Andrew J. MORRILL from Albert M. LIBBY 5 Jan 1880 Cumberland Deed Book 465 Pg 36.  SAYWOOD shall pay Sarah $900 to wit- $500 cash down and $400 one yr. from date of deed, “payable in one note secured by mortgage on the same property with legal interest then this obligation to be void, otherwise in full force.”  Signed/sealed Sarah K.     1 May 1885 - Quit-Claim Deed - Sarah K. MORRELL, widow of Andrew J. MORRELL, late of Windham sold to Albert N. SAYWOOD, of Windham in consideration of $1.00 two pieces of land deeded to Andrew J. MORRELL by A. M. LIBBY 5 Jan 1880 Cumberland Deed Book 465 Pg 36.  Signed/sealed Sarah K. MORRELL.  Witness signature Charles ROGERS.  [Ref. #2000:56]

     

    1 May 1885 - Guardian Deed-Private Sale - Rec’d and recorded Cumberland Co Reg of Deeds 25 Feb 1886 Book 499 Pg 453.  Sarah K. MORRELL of Windham, guardian of Annie L., Isaiah R. & Mildred E. MORRELL of Windham, minor heirs of Andrew J. MORRELL, late of Windham, deceased, sold to Albert N. SAYWOOD of Windham for the sum of $900, 40 acres of land in Windham.  Same being the former homestead of Albert M. LIBBY.  Also about 15 acres of land in Windham.  Same premises conveyed to A.J. MORRELL by A. M. LIBBY 5 Jan 1880 Cumberland Deed Book 465 Pg 36.  Others named-Albert T. ROGERS, Wm. SMITH, Jacob N. MORRELL, Barzillai NASH, Ephraim COBB (deceased), and Geo. W.     4 Dec 1886 - Guardian’s Deed-Private Sale - Rec’d and recorded Cumberland Co Reg of Deeds 28 Jun 1887 Book 533 Pg 479.  Mary S. FRYE, Guardian of Julia E. FRYE, minor and sole heir of John E. FRYE sold to Albert N. SAYWARD of Windham for the sum of $100 one fourth part of land near Duck Pond in Falmouth, ME.  Land, consisting of 3 parcels, contains about 14 ½ acres.  Same conveyed to Lindsey FRYE, Seward FRYE, Daniel McCALLAR and Jeremiah HOBBS by Samuel BLAKE 9 Feb 1844 Cumberland Deed Book 377 Pg 546; Lewis B.     1 Feb 1887 - Lydia A. MORRILL, widow of Thomas MORRILL of Windham leases to Eli STONE for one year-as she has 3 previous years-the homestead of late Thomas MORRILL; about 65 acres with buildings & the TOWLE place; about 73 acres with buildings, both in Windham.  In exchange, STONE to support and maintain Lydia MORRILL.  Signed/sealed-Lydia H. HUSTON of Falmouth, ME for the sum of $320 Lot No 53 in the second division of lands in Windham.  Same lot conveyed to Susan FRYE in her maiden name of Susan INGERSOLL by Abraham A. INGERSOLL of Falmouth, ME, in consideration of $1.00 and other valuable consideration Lot No. 53 in the second division of land in Windham, containing about 100 acres.  Same lot convey to Susan FRYE in her maiden name of Susan INGERSOLL by Abraham A.     15 Aug 1896 - Bond for Deed - Albert T. ROGERS of Windham is bound to Albert M. SAYWARD of Windham in the sum of $950.  Conditions- ROGERS to sell SAYWARD ½ the farm conveyed to William SMITH and Stephen HANSON by William COBB and Geo W. COBB 1 May 1865 Cumberland Deed Book 342 Pg 499, than conveyed to ROGERS by marietta P.     19 Feb 1901 - Bond for a Deed - Amelia H. BAILEY of Windham and Frank P. BAYLEY, husband of Amelia, of Windham are bound to Albert N. SAYWARD IN THE SUM OF $1000.  Conditions-Amelia and Frank agree to sell to SAYWARD 45 acres of Lot No 39 in the second division of land in Windham.  SAYWARD agrees to pay Amelia and Frank $1000 on or before 1 May 1902, “that is, the said SAYWARD to pay whatever money he receives from timber taken from said lot to be not less than five hundred dollars and the balance said BAILEY’s are to take a Mortgage on said lot for security for the remaining payment.”  Signed/sealed Amelia H. SAYWARD of Windham, in consideration of $1.00 and other valuable considerations, a piece of land with buildings in Windham, “ excepting and reserving, however, to myself, my heirs and assigns, the right to flow the above described premises by means of my present dam across said Ditch Brook, with flash boards thereon or additions thereto, or by means of any dam which may hereafter be build in place thereof, to any height which may be deemed desirable by me, or by my heirs or assigns.”  Land is part of the lot conveyed to Albert by Samuel V.
