<?p>

INTRODUCTION

</FONT
The York County Genealogical Society was organized early in 1985 at Wells, Maine to meet the desire of a number of area residents for an organization that would be able to concentrate its research and informational efforts on York County in greater depth than the coverage being given by organizations and periodicals with a statewide focus. Maine is territorially very large by comparison with the other New England states, and its migration and record keeping history both vary significantly from one region to another. York County's record of continuous settlement (in the towns from Wells and South Berwick south to Kittery - the only part of Maine not abandoned during the Indian Wars) since the early 17th century and its jurisdiction as Maine's only county until 1760 give it a unique position in the history of the state - in both county government and (to a large extent) in genealogy the other regions of Maine trace back to it.
