Arenac County Historical Society - Major Preservation Projects

The Arenac County Historical Society has undertaken several projects to preserve historically significant structures in Arenac County:

In 1887, the Michigan Central Railroad informed the citizens of Standish that it would build a new depot on one condition. If local farmers would haul in large stones for the material, the company would put up the building....

Established in 1857, Charity Island Lighthouse is located on the northwest tip of Charity Island, which is in the northern part of Saginaw Bay (Lake Huron). According to an article in the Daily News (Kingston, Ontario), from August 3, 1857, the light of Charity Island Lighthouse was to be exhibited for the first time on the night of the August 20, 1857.

The building is a former Arenac County Courthouse, built in 1890. It was built after the original courthouse burned to the ground...  The paint was barely dry on the stately structure when the county seat was moved to Standish.  The building sat vacant and abandoned until 1892, when it was purchased by the Masons.
