"I didn't know they sent daddies to Vietnam."
- Mrs. Kurtz, 2nd grade teacher, Sanborn Elementary School, Ossineke, Michigan

The Story Behind the Quote:
In the winter of 1970, my father moved my mother, myself, my 4 sisters and brother to a little gray house on the beach of Lake Huron in Ossineke. We'd lived in many far-off places during his Air Force career, so he wanted to have us close to his family and my mother's family in Alcona County while he was in Vietnam. He met with every one of our teacher's so that they would know what was happening. When he told my second grade teacher, this was her response. A simple, heart-felt sentence that is still fondly remembered by my Dad.
