Societies & Libraries

While Alcona County has a GREAT library system within its borders, don't forget those resources that may be located in neighboring counties. The same can also be said for other organizations and societies. The following is a list of some of which we are aware. If you know of more, please let us know. And as always, check the USGenWeb sites of neighboring counties.

This on-line society is a great source for all things Alcona!  It includes birth, marriage and death records, census indices, and newspaper articles.  Many thanks go out to Bob Ferrett and his great team of family and students for offering us the fruits of their labors.  A "Must Click" site.

Alcona County Library
Alcona County Library
Staffed by some wonderful and friendly people, the Alcona County library in Harrisville has a great local history and genealogy room.   Not only does this branch have many, if not most, of the Doris Gauthier books, but it is the repository for the Alcona County Herald and the Alcona County Review on microfilm.   You can obtain their phone number and address from their web site.
Alpena County Library
Alpena County Library
The Alpena County Library system is the repository for may of the Alpena newspapers.   They will gladly copy obituaries for you, but don't inundate them with too many at one time.   Generally, request 3 at a time.   You can include a donation if you'd like and, as always, use an SASE.   Another library staffed with helpful people, you can obtain their mailing info on their web site.
Bentley Historical Library
Bentley Historical Library (University of Michigan)
So, you're sitting at your computer miles away from Alcona county just wishing that your ancestor had had the foresight to purchase "History of the Lake Huron Shore with Illustrations and Biographical Sketches of Some of Its Prominent Men and Pioneers" (1883) and then had left it to you in some dusty old will.   Well, fret not. This library has ON LINE county histories that are viewable as scanned images or in pdf format.   You'll also find "A History of Northern Michgan and Its People" (1912) by Perry F. Powers.
