Welcome to the Alcona County, Michigan site of the USGenWeb.
My roots run very deep in Alcona County, but as much as I'd love to, do not live in the county. Unless I am specifically listed as a Look-Up Volunteer, please don't ask me to do research for you. Unfortunately, I don't have the necessary resources at my finger tips, although they ARE on my Christmas list. Any questions you may have regarding research tips, etc., should be posted on the query link listed below. I monitor this regularly and will be glad to respond to those queries that I may be knowledgable about. Please bear with me as I work on making changes to the site and add newand exciting (I hope) links.

For those of you without a traditional map, place your left hand in front of you and point to the last knuckle on your index finger. Now move down a tiny bit. Yep, right about there. 
(Okay, we like humor around here.)
It was originally set off from its parent counties of Alpena and Cheboygan
in 1840 and called Negwegon County.
In 1843, the name was changed to Alcona county. It was officially organized in 1869.
The earliest settlers were primarily fishermen and trappers and were soon followed by woodsmen.
The timber in this region was vast. But soon enough, it was gone. Some folks followed
the timber west. Others stayed on and tried to make a go of it at farming. Many great
farms dot the landscape of this county and have been in families for generations.
Eventually, tourism became a big draw to this entire area.
With its abundance of natural resources, beautiful shoreline, picturesque towns
and fine quality of people, Alcona County has managed to thrive while still maintaining
its rural heritage.
No, I don't work for the local chamber of commerce. I just love Alcona County
and its wonderful history. My hope is that I can point you in the
direction toward some of the wonderful
resources available to help you in your search for your Alcona roots.
And then you'll grow to love this place as much as I do...if ya' don't already!
