This directory can help you with that sticky time period between 1880 and 1900 where the census was made unavailable. 

The names have all been transcribed in order to make it easier for the search engines to pick up information. Remember that your ancestor might not appear in here - most of these directories one had to pay a small fee to get your name printed in them. Or, if a wife appears and a husband does not, it doesn't necessarily mean that the husband left the wife - he could have been logging in another area at the time of publication.
