WELCOME HOME  to Berrien County, MI GenWeb.  We are proud to be a part of the oldest Internet genealogical research group,
"The US GenWeb". Berrien was named for the Honorable John M. Berrien, Attorney General under the direction of President Andrew Jackson.
This County was established in 1829 and organized in 1831. Berrien Springs was originally the county seat until 1894 when Saint Joseph became the county seat and remains the same in modern day.
First Census taken in this county was in 1830 when it was noted as the Niles township and much was still in the neighboring county of Cass.
As of February, 2009 Deanna Branson West became the new Berrien County GenWeb Coordinator - email her at berrienmigenweb@yahoo.com

History and Growth of the MIGenWeb Project   -  In March and April, 1996, a group of genealogists organized the Kentucky Comprehensive Genealogy Database Project, now known as the Kentucky GenWeb Project. The idea was to provide a single entry point for all counties in Kentucky, where collected databases would be stored. In addition, the databases would be indexed and cross-linked, so that even if an individual were found in more than one county, they could be located in the index. At the same time, volunteers were found who were willing to coordinate the collection of databases and generally oversee the contents of the web page. The MIGenWeb Project is an outgrowth of that original Kentucky project for the state of Michigan and also began in 1996.
