Brief History of Convis
Township
Sanford Chaffee was the first settler in the area in 1835. James Lane, William Newman
and Paul Moss came directly from England the next year. The township was named for General
Ezra Convis who settled Battle Creek and Verona (Emmett Township). The first postmaster of
Convis Centre was John W. Sammons in 1856. Some early township officials: Elisha Brace
(supervisor and justice of the peace), Thomas L. VanGelsen (clerk), Levi Rowley
(treasurer), Asahel Hawkins (assessor and justice of the peace), Daniel Beers (assessor
and justice of the peace), Ira H. Elsworth (assessor), and S. D. Bardon (justice of the
peace).
