D- Miss Christina Mench, age 60 yrs, was found dead in a water closet on Sat. last. She was a sister of Mrs Mathias Fisher, of Fisher settlement and lived there.

D- Jennie E Church, wife of RF, of consumption, age 25 yrs, buried in former home of Maple Rapids. Leaves husband & little girl.

Will Snider, who has worked for Murray & Dusenbury, has accepted a job in the Lyons bank.

Will French returned to Ann Arbor after vacation.

D- looks like suicide of Dunlap in Mt Clemens was a sham.

Peter Snider - dray & express business proprietor. Fred Snider manages the reins.

I Henshaw is building a big ice house.

Mr & Mrs Johnson of Albion are in town visiting their dau., Mrs Dr Collins.

Mrs Martha J Linton has a new icehouse on her premises.

Within the past week, Dr EA Collins purchased of his father, the fine residence on corner of Adams & Webster St. We hope this is but the beginning of renewed activity of sale in all branches of trade & commerce so long looked for in our midst.

D- at home Jan. 17, Arza Lewis, age 80. Born at Derby, Conn., on May 1, 1799, son of Ezra Lewis. Moved to NY- township of Galen, Wayne Co. Married Mary Redfield June 1, 1828, they spent a half century together. They moved to Homer in 1837, and spent 20 years in mercantile & milling pursuits. In 1852 or 53, bought site on which Pres. Church now stands and helped build church there. His wife, oldest son & 2 dau.survive. His oldest dau. & youngest son died earlier. Two surviving brothers from abroad, both younger than he, were here for the funeral.

D- RF Church's mother died Wed. in Rives Twp.

D- Milton Barney, Sacramento, Cal., age about 83 yrs, Jan. 5, 1879 of pneumonia. Born Feb. 3, 1796, New Marlborough, Mass. Married Sophia Dorsey (a sister of Mrs Lydia Miller) in 1830 and moved to Homer in 1832 and was the first white settler here. He built the stone house now occupied by A Collins, and paid much to build the old ME Church. Five daughters survive, all in California.

Dr Collins has had a severe attack of pleurisy. Dr Holmes will soon move to Litchfield.

Thos. Lyon has new counter railing, woodwork by John Snider, and plate glass from New York.

D- at res. in Albion, Mrs James Owen, age 79, former res. of Homer, who moved to Albion after her husband's death 17 yrs ago. Buried with husband in the old cemetery. Jan 30, 1879.

Hoaglin's clothing store prices have been reduced.

We learn that Susan B Anthony wishes to speak here. Susan, don't you do it, this is an awful bad show town!

D- Daniel Sylvester of Litchfield, was buried last Sunday with Masonic ceremony.

Res. of Andrew Cool, in Eastern part of twp., was destroyed by fire last Thurs. He had no insurance.

D- Mrs Alonzo Church, at her daughter's in Jackson, Jan. 19, age 53, buried in Napoleon. Born Mary Jane Fellows in Batavia, Genessee Co., NY, in 1826, married Alonzo at Oakfield, Genessee Co, NY in May 1844.

15 tramps enjoyed the hospitality of Marshal Dorsey's boarding house last week.

Last day of school - Miss Libbie Barnes was to graduate, but was too ill. Miss Gussie E Eslow, Miss Jessie M Hoffman, Miss Nora V Thorn, and Miss Emma E Sabin gave good speeches.

Village school has 220 students this term.

Business notes- CL LaDow opened a feed store opposite the post office. New boot & shoe shop opened in rear of post office. Mrs J Kesler has gone after a new stock of spring goods. Mineral water at Benedict & Wilson's soda fountain. Beedon Bros. moved ag. implements next door to meat market.

Family living west of Litchfield lost 3 children within 15 hours from diphtheria. All were buried in one grave. Tues.

4th. Took 8 hours and 21 minutes. Proceeds were $29.40 for firemen.

Petition of DP Simmons, Union School principal, that all boys from school be prohibited from running at large in the streets after dark, was referred to police committee.

100 mile walk at Albion starts Friday.

Contract for frescoing the ME Church walls was let to John H Reimers of Jackson.

D- Edwin Wells, a tramp, had pneumonia, died Wed. His mother lives in Detroit. He was about 26 yrs, of French descent, and a moulder, stove cutter & caulker. County will have to pay for expenses.

D- in Jackson, 15th inst., age 71, Dr Dwight Nims, a former res. of Homer, who settled here in 1839 and moved to Jackson in 1865. Was a prominent physician.

Dr EA Collins has a new drug store in Palmer's grocery with a tasty show case.

Mrs Milah A Hatch celebrated her 74th birthday. She has 15 children & grandchildren and has been a Homer resident since June 10, 1835.

Miss Jennie Perry, teacher in grammar school, Miss FR Wheelock, of intermediate, and Miss Mary Thorn, of primary school, will be paid a salary of $275 each, a reduction of $25.

D- Nelson Coryell, of Hillsdale, at home of son-in-law, Blake Warner, of Clarendon, June 30, after a fall from a cherry tree. He was 56, leaves wife, 4 children - 2 sons, 2 dau.

He was former resident of Homer and brother-in-law of Mrs DL Hutchinson of Clarendon.

Historical sketch of Presbyterian Church- Present pastor is Rev. AS Badger. Up to 1853, public worship was held in small frame building, or "session house" situated a few rods east of Methodist Church. At that time this was sold and converted into a private residence and in 1853-4 the present brick building put up at a cost of $8,000. Parsonage was built in 1867 and cost $3,000.

Protestant Episcopal Church, called Christ Church, was organized May 25, 1840. Present church was built in 1842, has about 25 members.

Masonic Lodge #29, one of oldest in State, was organized Aug. 1848. First officers were: Caleb Sherman, WM, Isaac Vanfassen, SW, Jas. Valentine, JW, Nathan Eslow, Treas., Michael Miller, Sen. Deacon, Peter Arthur, Jr Deacon, Jonathon Robinson, Tyler, Jas. T Woolley & Joseph Gibbs, Stewards. Meetings were first held at Dorsey House, now have lodge rooms over Mr Daniel Dorsey's wagon shop. Presently Dr EA Collins is WM, and there are 60-70 members.

CW Hatch, son of Mr DP Hatch, left for Kansas the first of the week, for the purpose of prospecting with a view of locating there.

CJ Thorpe, of Sherwood, has been hired as principal of the village school.

Mrs Beersheba Prior, age 92, and very lively, is visiting her dau., Mrs Almond Hopkins. Mrs Prior lived here 15 years ago in house now occupied by Clarence Barnum.

D- a child in family of Chas. Groesbeck, who lives in SW corner of twp., of diphtheria (prevalent in Bentley's Corner's area) Also are 5 other cases of it in the same family.

Mrs C Mount, of Homer Twp., raised 2000 bushels of wheat this season.

Windows for audience room of ME Church have arrived and are indeed an ornament to the edifice.

Rev. EL Kellogg was given a fine horse, presented by Rev. Thos. Lyon.

D- Mrs Maggie Cogswell, Aug. 4, of consumption, she was the wife of Ezekiel Cogswell, and a member of ME Church 30 yrs. This is especially sad since her dau., Mrs A Flint, recently died.

Mr Clay Hartung, of this twp., is building a new $3,000 house. H McCartney is doing carpentry.

Editor of Homer Index has been associated with newspaper work as proprietor & editor, since arriving at age 17 yrs. He is not yet 21, but is most enterprising.

Mr John L Keep was threshing at Geo. Smith's, west of village, and had his arm mangled. It was amputated above the elbow.

Jas. M North bought interest of WH Adams in Calhoun Mills & secured the services of Mr Oscar Hubbard, a first class miller from Albion. Feed store on Sophia St has again been started.

Marshal Dorsey took Myron Rossetter, the young lad who stole money from the MCR depot recently, to Lansing Reform School. He'll be there 5 years. He also stole a team & wagon belonging to James Rouin of Clarendon.

Mrs. Geo. H French celebrated her 59th birthday Aug. 21, and received a nice silver set from her family.

HS Green bought home of Willard Cotton, on Main St.

David Kirby bought wagon shop of Andrew Dorsey. Dorsey is village marshal.

D- Mrs Chas. Caswell, who died at home in Concord, Thurs of last week. She & her family were former residents of Homer.

Mr & Mrs Dr OS Phelps were given a surprise party, they will be moving about 150 miles north of San Francisco.

Mr CJ Murray bought Dr Phelps' fine piano for $200.

Dr MW Taylor has located here to practice medicine.

WW Wells leaves for a visit to his old home in NY State. It has been 41 years since he left there.

Kalamazoo board recently offered principalship of their school to Prof. HN French, but Marshall board refused to release him.

D- WW Reed, formerly Air Line operator here, died at home in Leoni on Aug. 30.

D- Jennie May Jones, age 21y,6m,28d, of consumption, the dau. of Eli B & Caroline H Jones. She was born in Calhoun Co. Jan. 5, 1858, and came here in 1869 with parents. She was the niece of Mrs DP Hatch of Homer Twp.

Administrator's sale notice - estate of Alexander Arthur.

Supervisor AH Spaulding's grain barn & contents burned last Friday, loss from $1000-1500. Contained 700 bushels of wheat, etc. The fire was caused by a little boy, a relative.

Spaulding has had bad luck this season, having also lost a little child.

AE Howell's 3 yr. old took 1st prize in his race at the State Fair.

D- Funeral of Mrs Thos. Berger, who died last Tues., took place at ME Church Thurs. She'd been ill 2 or 3 days.

D- in Dallas, Texas, Oct 14, Vernon P Redfield in the 32nd yr of his age. He was brother of Chas. Redfield of Homer & of CS & BB Redfield, of Englewood, Ill. He was born here Oct. 26, 1847, and moved to Iowa at age 10 to live with relatives. 7 or 8 years ago he moved to Texas. He was unmarried. Buried Trinity Cemetery, Dallas.

D- the remains of Dr Seth N Coons, who died the 16th at the asylum in Kalamazoo, were brought here for burial. Until recently he lived here and was known as a skillfull doctor and was well respected. He was born at Penn Yan, Yates Co, NY, 7-26-1835. Funeral at res. of CM Brewer. Member Pres. Church.

D- at res. of son-in-law, AJ Kell, in Pulaski, Nov. 2, Mrs Cornelia N Redfield, in 69th yr. She was Cornelia Nancy Parkinson, born 10-3-1811, in Schoharie Co, NY. Her mother died while she was very young, so she lived with older sisters. As a young lady, lived with her sister, Mrs Hiram Smith, at Marengo, NY. She married BS Redfield of Clyde, NY, Jan 16, 1834. They came to Homer in 1842. Her husband died 5-23-1857, leaving her with 7 children. Pres. Church. 2 sons died before her, one less than a month ago. 3 sons and 2 dau, all adults, survive her.

D- the funeral of Mrs Orrin Ball, who died Wed last, took place on Friday. She was an old res. of Homer and charter member of the Methodist Society.

D- more on Mrs Ball, who died at her res. in Homer. Sarah, wife of Orrin Ball, age 73. Sarah Cogswell was born in Homer, Cortland Co., NY in 1806. She joined ME Church at age 8, was educated at Casanovia(?) Seminary. In 1828, she married Orrin Ball, and came to Homer, Mi in 1836, where she, with her husband and others, composed the first class organized in this place.
