THE GRIM REAPER'S HARVEST OF SOLDIERS OF THE CIVIL WAR
***** A Record of Those Living in Our County 37 Years Ago. *****
Transcribers Notes (Feb. 27, 2000) ‑
The June 2, 1932 issue of the CHEBOYGAN OBSERVER published a list of Civil War Veterans residing in Cheboygan County, Michigan on June 1, 1894. This list not only contained veteran's names, but the township, city or village the veterans were living in. I have extracted this information from the article and arranged it in tabular form by Surname, First Name and Township/City. There are 194 names listed in this table. In transcribing this info, careful attention was given in preserving the spelling (right or wrong) as found. However, no effort was made to establish the accuracy of this information or its completeness. Please keep this mind as well as the 1894 date.
The beginning of the article reads as follows:
"THE GRIM REAPER'S HARVEST OF SOLDIERS OF THE CIVIL WAR A Record of Those Living in Our County 37 Years Ago. ‑‑‑‑‑‑‑‑‑‑‑‑‑‑‑‑‑‑‑‑‑‑‑‑‑‑‑‑‑‑‑‑‑‑‑‑‑‑‑‑‑‑‑‑‑‑‑‑‑‑‑‑‑‑‑‑ Through the courtesy and thoughtfulness of Editor M. H. DeFoe of the Charlotte Republican we are privileged to give to our readers at this time a list of the United States Soldiers of the Civil War still residing in our county on June 1st, 1894, just 37 years ago. Where our brother editor obtained this printed list we do not know, but it must have been discovered by him in some authentic printed record, and he, sensing the interest it would hold for our readers, was kind enough to voluntarily submit the evidence, which will show after one counts up the old G.A.R. members that remain with us to help celebrate this last memorial day, that their members are being whittled down very fast, and soon those splendid old patriots will be but a memory. It is not a pleasant topic to have under consideration but it is all too true and we must reconcile ourselves to that fact, and we must also remember that another 37 years will reduce the number of veterans of the last great war to just as small numbers as did the last 37 years thin the ranks of the old civil war vets.
Here is a list of the soldiers of the civil war residing in Cheboygan county on June 1st, 1894 as furnished us by Editor DeFoe:"
