FRANCOIS XAVIER PAYMENT

When the earthly life of F.X.Payment, age 72, came to an end at his home in East Spruce Street. Sault Ste. Marie lost not only one of its esteemed citizens but it lost virtually its only remaining boat builder - a man who for more than two scores years pled his trade in his little shop near his residence 807 East Spruce Street. Mr. Payments’ death was due to an abscess, which had formed in his head and which, brought on paralysis. The funeral services will be held in St. Mary’s Catholic Church on Tuesday morning at 8:30 a.m. with burial following in Riverside Cemetery - Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. “Knowing F.X. Payment all my life, I want to say that he was one of the most honorable men I have ever met.” F.W. Roach told the News today, and the sentiment is the same as has been expressed by many other whom knew him most intimately. The largest vessel built by Mr. Payment was the government tug, “West Neebish”. A large number of small craft, which yet ply the river, are the products of his skilled labor. The coming of the automobile, which superceded the river craft to a large extent, severely crippled the boat building business and that fact, together, with advancing age, practically put a stop to a work in the little shop of Mr. Payment. The birthplace of Mr. Payment was in Montreal. He came to the Sault when he was five years of age. Surviving members of the immediate family are his wife and two sons, Charles and Frank of Sugar Island. The two sons were at the bedside when death came.

FRED C. PAYMENT

Many people in Bay City will be shocked and surprised to learn of the death yesterday morning of FRED C. PAYMENT at St. Mary’s hospital, Detroit, as a result of injuries inflicted by his own hand while temporarily insane. The deceased came to Bay City over 30 years ago with his father, from Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. His father Michael G. Payment gradually accumulated considerable real estate in the Tenth ward in the vicinity of Belina Street. A few years ago the father died at the age of 82, leaving the son in charge of the property. The latter had been employed as clerk in various grocery houses and was known as a capable salesman. But in handling the property placed under his care, he met with reverses, finally selling out every-thing.

Early last summer, being out of employment, he removed to Detroit. There he did not meet with better success, and a couple of months ago, hearing of a vacant position here, he returned to take it, but arrived only to learn that it had already been filled. He was then in rather feeble health and his ill-luck seemed to prey upon his mind to such an extent that his friends soon began to fear that his reason was departing. During his few weeks sojourn here he was constantly despondent, going so far on more than one occasion as to intimate that he would take his own life. Shortly before the holidays he became so ill that relatives sent for him and placed him in St. Mary’s Hospital in Detroit. Sunday he stabbed himself in the neck with a knife. It was thought at first that he would recover, but yesterday morning his condition changed suddenly for the worse and death soon ensued. He was aged 52 years, and a widower, his wife having died several years ago after a brief union. The remains will be brought to Bay City for burial.

The Detroit News says this about suicide: ‘SISTER FRANCES SAYS THAT BEFORE PAYMENT WAS TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL, THE CITY PHYSICIAN ASK IF THERE WERE ANY OBJECTIONS TO RECEIVING A PATIENT WHO WAS SUFFERING FROM DESPONDENCY. SHE REPLIED THAT THERE WERE NONE, IF THE PATIENT WAS QUIET, BUT WHEN PAYMENT WAS BROUGHT TO THE HOSPITAL DID NOT KNOW THAT HE WAS THE MAN IN QUESTION.”

This sister in charge of the ward in which Payment was placed said that he appeared at times to be deranged. Sunday evening one of the hospital patients noticed Payment in a closet, and saw blood on the floor. The attendant found him with a cut on the left side of the throat. They could not find the knife, and do not know where he procures it. After the wound was sewed up and bandaged, Payment wanted to tear the bandages off. Dr. Payment, the Dentist at 83 Woodward Avenue is a brother of the deceased. He had a long talk with him a week ago, and says that he was suffering from temporary insanity. Another brother, Cloves Payment, lives in Buffalo.”

A very full biographical sketch appeared in a Bay City paper, from which the following was taken: M. G. In 1840, he was united in marriage to C. Edesse, the oldest daughter of Dominique Riopelle, a young lady of wealth and accomplishments, who died on Sugar Island in 1850, at the age of 30 years, leaving four young children, the youngest an infant daughter two died at the age of six months. Miss Rose Payment, sister of the deceased, made her home with her widowed brother and his three sons until her death, which occurred in Bay City in 1888. Mr. Payment’s life was one of constant struggle, but he was a man of uncommon natural talents and indomitable energy and activity, and he remained perseverant to the end, in spite of the deepest calamities and loss of money in speculations of various kinds. He studied the scriptures diligently for twenty-five years and knew the New Testament by heart. His mental faculties remained bright and clear to the last, and the noble example which he set will make him regretted by all with whom he came in contact. He left a collection of valuable manuscripts to his son F. C Payment, who was deeply attached to him and was constantly in his company for months up to the time of his death. The surviving members of his family are Dr. R. C. Payment, dentist of Detroit; Clovis C. Payment, engineer at Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan and Fred. C. The bullet entered the body in the middle of the back and passed thru the right lung, and death came in about twenty minutes. Ernest and his older brother Elman, were preparing to go out to play ball and thought they would take the gun along with them. Died At 105 Years of Age.

Mrs. Picquette, Soo's Oldest Inhabitant
Passed Away Yesterday.

Mrs. Picquette, of East Portage Avenue, undoubtedly the oldest resident of the city or county, died yesterday afternoon, at the home of her son, Antoine Picquette from the infirmities of old age.  Mrs. Picquette's age is said to be 105 years.  She has seen the end of one century, the completion of a second and the dawning of a third.  Mrs. Picquette was the mother of a large family, all of whom, however, are dead, with the exception of two sons, Charles and Antoine Picquette.  The funeral arrangements are not as yet complete.

AGED INDIAN DIES

 ANTOINE PIQUETTE AN INDIAN
 GUIDE AND MAIL CARRIER.
 --------------
WAS FACTOR IN THE HISTORY OF MICHIGAN
 ---------------
DROVE DOG SLEDS FROM SAGINAW 40 YEARS AGO.
 --------------------
Was One of Two Men who Brought the News of Assassination of
Lincoln to the Soo - Funeral Will Be Held Tomorrow.
 ------------------
Antoine Piquette, the last of the old Indian guides and mail carriers, who had to do with the affairs of the Soo in the early days before the railroads were built into this part of the country, is dead.  The funeral will be held at St. Mary's Catholic church at 9 o'clock tomorrow morning and the internment will take place at Riverside cemetery.

The passing of Antoine Piquette will recall to the minds of the old settlers of the city the days when the mails were carried over the snow from Saginaw on sleds drawn by dogs.  As near as can be figured the deceased was about 85 years of age.  He leaves a widow and several children.

It was Antoine Piquette and the late John Boucher who brought to the Soo the news of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln in 1865.  Those who were residents of the St. Mary's valley will remember the excitement occasioned by the news, and not a few will feel a pang of regret that the aged pioneer has passed away.

The mail service in those days was not what it is today.  As soon as navigation closed late in the fall the dog teams were brought into play and the mail brought through the woods from Saginaw, a trip calling for bravery as well as an ironclad constitution.  Only the most sturdy of the Ojibways were able to perform the task satisfactorily, and those who were on the scene of action at the time remember that Antoine Piquette could be relied upon to perform the work with precision, no matter what the weather.  His life linked with that of AHonest@ John Boucher will go on record as one of the most interesting chapters to the history of early Michigan.

It was in those days that the news was read to the settlers in the local postoffice, so that the coming of the mail was a great event at the "portage."  The community, lived within itself for months, so that any word from the outside world was always welcome.

Of late-years Mr. Piquette has been in feeble health and unable to do any kind of manual labor.  Fishing was his only pastime.  He passed away peacefully at the old homestead on Portage Avenue, and thus has Michigan lost a man, who, though of late years little before the public eye, was in the days that have gone a factor in the history of the upper peninsula.  He was the last of the old timers of his race.

Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Richards were among the pioneers of Barron County, coming here about 45 years ago, and located on a homestead near Hillsdale, and enjoyed an extensive acquaintance throughout the Country. After her husband’s death she continued on a farm about eleven years, and after suffering a bad fall some three years ago has made her home with her son Fred. Her husband was a Civil War Veteran. Funeral services were held at the home Saturday, conducted by Rev. Geo. E. Griffith of the Presbyterian Church, and the remains were laid to rest in the family lot at Barron beside those whom have gone before. “Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon her.”

JOSEPH RIVERS

Joseph Rivers, 23, of this city, an Iron Prospector, drowned in the Montreal River last Monday when his canoe capsized, according to word brought here today by Fred Coubu, his partner and fellow prospector. The two had been spending the winter in the Canadian wilds trapping and prospecting, and started toward the Algoma & Central Railroad in a canoe. The currant just above 7-footfall in the river caught the canoe carrying the two men. River could not swim and his body was carried over the fall and has not been found. Coubu searched for two days for his companion’s body and then walked to a camp, which gave his assistance in reaching the Soo. Rivers had a wife and two small sons here.
