Was Connected With Sault Savings Bank 33 Years
Funeral to be Held at Adrian, Old Home, Friday
----------------
Ed L. Stanley, age 56, for many years a citizen of Sault Ste. Marie,
died at 6:15 Tuesday evening in Rochester, Minn. where he had been receiving
medical treatment for spleen trouble the last month. Mr. Stanley's death
comes as somewhat of a shock to his many friends here, although it has
been known for the last six months that his condition was precarious. He
returned from California several months ago seemingly in much better health
than had been his for some time, but suffered a relapse in Chicago, and
went to Rochester on what proved to be a final and fruitless effort at
recovery.
Mrs. Stanley and a sister, Miss Alice Stanley, of San Diego, California, and Herbert E. Fletcher, cashier of the Sault Savings Bank, was with him when the end came. His only daughter, Mrs. Eunice D. Shideman, of Albion, Mich., was with him for several days recently, leaving only a day or two before the end came for her home.
Came Here 33 Years Ago
Coming to the Sault 33 years ago from Adrian, Mr. Stanley went to work as a clerk in the Sault Savings bank, in October, 1888, and was connected with the institution continuousley until the first day of January, 1922, when his resignation, offered because of ill health several months before that time, became effective. He was a cashier of the bank for some years prior to his death.
For some years, Mr. Stanley was also connected with the Soo Woolen Mills, being secretary and treasurer of the company up to the time of his death. Frank P. Sullivan, president of the company, today ordered the mills closed down until after the funeral, as a mark of respect to Mr. Stanley. Mr. Sullivan spent several days in Rochester with Mr. Stanley recently, returning to the Sault two weeks ago. On his return he brought back word that Mr. Stanley's condition was practically hopeless, although the end was not looked for as soon as it came.
Funeral in Adrian
The body is being shipped to Adrian today and the funeral will take place there Friday, it is understood. Mr. Fletcher will accompany the body to Adrian. A.E. Cullis of the Soo Woolen Mills, who is now in lower Michigan, will also attend the funeral. Besides the widow and daughter, Mr. Stanley is survived by four sisters, two of whom live in San Diego, California, another in Centralia, Wash., and a fourth, Mrs. Daniel Birdsall, in Albion, Michigan. Mr. Stanley was a Mason and a Knight Templar, belonging to Ahmed Temple and the Shrine, taking his consistory degrees in Marquette only last December, and also belonged to the Blue Lodge, chapter and temple here. He never held or sought public or elective office.
