The New River Cemetery is located in Section 32 of
Port Austin Township, Huron County, Michigan.
It is owned and operated by Huron Township, Huron County, and is 6.8
miles east of M-53 (Port Austin) on M-25 at the intersection of M-25 and New
River Road. It was established to serve
the then active communities of Grindstone City and New River and nearby
townships. It is currently an active
cemetery.
There are a number of unmarked but evident graves
(depressions, stones lacking markings or markings too faint to read, changes in
grass color, curbed areas) scattered throughout the cemetery. Some graves have also been left unmarked for
personal or financial reasons. In many
cases, wooden markers were likely installed on new graves but have long ago
deteriorated and disappeared. There is a
large open area of land immediately east to the cemetery; this is a “Potters
Field” for burial of indigent persons.
There are no grave markers in this area, but undoubtedly some graves.
