TENNANT. Third great grandfather William Henry Tennant and wife Emma
Simmons Tennant moved to Jackson in 1869. He was a stone mason. They
had 5 children: Rosa E. Tennant, Lilly Tennant, William H. Tennant,
Rose Tennant and Francis P. Tennant. I have the first Rose born and
deceased in Jackson. All others were also born in Jackson according to
1870 & 1880 census records. I cannot locate birth records of Lilly
1871, or William Jr 1874. They lived on the corner of North St E and
what is now Ellery. I have been to the Jackson Library and found
information on William Sr. Emma and Rose both died in Jackson but I
cannot locate a grave or burial site. I looked through the records
at the library. Any suggestions? Is the Jackson County Cemetery the
same as the Cemetery records of Jackson in the library? I am not from
Jackson am currently in Grand Rapids.
William also had three other children from a previous marriage. George
W. Tennant, Samuel J. Tennant and Ruth Tennant. His first wifes name
was Ruth Whitehead Tennant. Some of this family settled in Benzie
County. I have not been able to locate an info on Lilly or William Jr.

I'm researching the surname MASON. They came to MI before 1835 and settled
in the twp of Napolean. I'm particularly interested in what became of my
g-g-grandmother Betsey Chapman MASON. I no longer find her on the census
or other records after 1844. But my g-g-grandfather is found in WI without
her and their two sons. Did she die? But what happened to the sons who
later show on the census in WI.

Looking for info on my g-g-grandparents, Samuel Mills and Rosetta (or

was minister of Methodist or Christian Church. Had believed they lived
in Kalamazoo until their deaths in early 1900s. However, was unable to
find them in 1860 census there and found them instead in Jackson County
at Spring Arbor in 1860 census. Had son, Abel, and daughter, Eunice

Joseph Cowley, Sr. is shown living in Jackson in 1898 according to the
Jackson City Directory. In 1899 it shows his wife, Emma as a widow. The 1900
census shows Emma and their five children, listing her as a widow.
My Grandma (one of the 5 children) always told us (before she died) that her
father died when she was 3 (this would be 1899). She also said that he died
in a gas explosion at work. We assumed (possibly incorrectly) that Joseph
worked for a gas company. However, we have done a state-wide (and local)
search for a death certificate, but the state said that there was no death
certificate on file in Michigan.
We have come to a dead end and don't know where else to look. I have glanced
through newspapers, but a two year time frame is a lot of papers to look
through. I also found that there was a gas company in Jackson during that
time but they are out of business and I have no idea how to contact them.
