The following information extracted from the preface to The Registers of North Farnham Parish, 1663 - 1814, and Lunenburg Parish, 1783 -1800, Richmond County, Virginia is provided to aid the visitor to this web site in understanding the lack of information for the time that our ancestors were in Richmond County. In reality, it is remarkable that we have as much information as we have. Direct quotes are in italics.

The original parish registers are not known to exist. Instead there are two alphabetical arrangements of 18th century origin. While these have been referred to at times as the "original registers," they are not. A few entries from the late 18th century and even from the 19th century have been made in the North Farnham Parish Register (1663-1814).

It is obvious that in transcribing the presently preserved alphabetized volumes, various errors were made and some of these will be apparent in the present arrangement. However, with certain reservations, I feel we can trust these transcripts for the most part.(King)

The surviving North Farnham Parish Register volume is over 200 years old. Some pages have disintegrated in places. One leather bound cover is missing. Many pages have separated from the original spine. Over time, various individuals have numbered the pages haphazardly with ink, lead pencil and blue crayon. The paginations are not always identical. In the sixties, a lamination process was used to restore the volume at the Virginia State Library. Since some of the pages were obviously out of sequence, some pages were shuffled before the volume was rebound -

For the first 19 years of the North Farnham Parish Register (1663-1814), there was no such parish. The Farnham Parish covered both sides of the Rappahannock River in Old Rappahannock County. In 1684, the parish was subdivided into North Farnham Parish and South Farnham Parish with the Rappahannock River as a natural boundary. In 1692, Old Rappahannock County was split into two new counties, with South Farnham Parish in Essex County and North Farnham Parish in Richmond County.

No history of Richmond County (as of 1966) has been published but a number of works af ford considerable data in regard to its civil and ecclesiastical affairs. Bishop William Meade... in ... Old Churches and Families of Virginia, ... indicates that Farnham Parish doubtless derived its name from a town in Surrey, England, in which the castle of the Bishop of Winchester was located.

Dr. George MacLaren Brydon has left us some interesting detail in regard to Richmond County and its parishes in Virginia's Mother Church (two volumes, Richmond, 1947 and 1952) but ...spares us much of the detail in regard to the great dissatisfaction in Lunenburg Parish during the tenure of the Reverend Mr. William Kay from 1745 to 1752. If we can believe all the Rev. Mr, Kay related to the Lord Bishop of London in his letter written from Williamsburg on the 14th of June 1752 as to conditions in Lunenburg Parish, then there is little wonder that a colonial register of the Parish did not survive the turmoil. By some mischance shortly after he took charge of Lunenburg Parish in 1745, the Rev. Mr. Kay says he "found to my sorrow, that I had one wealthy, Great, powerful Colonel named Landon Carter, a leading Man in my Vestry, whom I could not reasonably please or oblige, very proud, haughty, imperious and fickle." . . . "He drew over six of the Vestry to him and most of these his kindred relations, or such as were subject unto him" and they signed an order to discharge me and "lock up the doors and Nail up the pulpits, Reading desks and windows of both Churches, which they did and he himself with the other six vestrymen the next Sabbath Day forbad me and the Congregation to enter the Church; but at one of my Churches, where were many of my friends, they forced him and his six away, broke open the doors, pulpits and desks, and conducted me in. This Church, I had free liberty of, while I stayed in the parish. But at the other Church I preached out of doors in the yard two years and a half. These Seven let out my glebe, Rent free, to three Men poor and wicked enough not to stick at anything." . . "The names of these Men are William Degge, George Russell and Thomas Russell."
