Jun 20, 1741 from Richard Ellit & Jamima, his wife, of NF in R, planter, to Rawleigh Chinn Sr of the Parish of St Mary's White Chappel in the County of Lancaster, Gent, for 3000 pounds of tobacco, all of their messuage, piece, & parcel of land, being in NF in R, containing 40 acres with all orchards, gardens, outhouses, fencing, and other conveniences to the same belonging. The 40 acres is part of a patent for 1155 acres first granted to Samuell Griffin, Gent, by patent dated Jan 1, 1660, who suffered the same to lapse for want of seating thereon; afterwards it was granted to Ambrose Clare, who also suffered the said land to lapse, yet assigned & made over the same to Catharine Griffin, who intermarried with William Fantleroy, and together with the said William Fantleroy, her husband, sold the same to several persons, from whom William Smoot, by several means (mesne?) conveyances, claims 409 acres of the abovesaid 1155 acres. Said Smoot, being possessed with the 409 acres and moving for our deed for the same as lapse by the aforesaid persons, obtained a deed for 409 acres on Feb 12, 1704(/5). Said Smoot sold 100 of the 409 acres to Richard Ellit Sr of North Farnham in Richmond County by bond and other writings dated Mar 18, 1683/4. Said Richard Ellit Sr dying, the 100 acres descended to Richard Ellit Jr, son of the abovesaid Richard Ellit, as heir at law to the said Richard Ellit, his father, which said 40 acres is bounded by a red oak standing near the County Road, the Bottom of Joseph Durham's Old Field, which red oak divides this land from Dominick Newgent's land & Joseph Durham's land, the Road called Northumberland Road, William Hanks, Mill's old field, Samuel Griffin. Page 18. Bond. Mar 18, 1683/4.William Smoot of Farnham Parish in the County of Rappahanock, planter, gave bond of 4800 pounds of tobacco and cask, to Richard Ellit of same, planter on Mar 18, 1683/4. Smoot conveyed to Ellit the 100 acres (the said plantation whereon Thos Samson now lives being included). The purpose of this bond is to warrant that, if Ellit shall be ousted or dispossessed of any part of the land, then Smoot shall convey to Richard Ellit 100 acres, or so much as they shall be disposed of.
