Halifax County was formed in 1752 from Lunenburg County, and included the present Virginia counties of Pittsylvania, Henry, Franklin, and Patrick

Halifax County, Virginia, Plea Book 1 consists of abstracts of Plea Book 1. It includes court orders for administration and inventory of estates, deed and dower acknowledgements, bills of sale, deeds of gift, leases, powers of attorney, appointments of militia officers, Constitutional officers of the county, lists of the establishment of roads, mills, ferries, ordinaries, etc., as well as petitions for debts due.

 p. 85 -William Montgomery assignee of David Bell vs Thomas Shockley, deft. not found, plt. by Clement Read his atty. granted a new process

James Johnson and John Branch vs Thomas Shockley, deft. given until this court, now called & not appearing, plt. by Clement Read, atty., granted an attachment for £25 agst deft.

p 122 - At a Court held for Halifax County 20 June 1753
Present: William Wynne, Andrew Wade, Robert Wade and Hugh Moore, Gent. Justices

In case of James Johnson & John Branch vs Thomas Shockley's estate, deft. is runaway, plts granted an alias attachment. I

p 126 - On petition of William Montgomery vs Thomas Shockley the summons came too late to serve, plt. by his atty. granted a new process.

p 201 - In case of James Johnson and John Branch vs Thomas Shockley, the attachment awarded plt. agst deft.'s estate was not executed, plt. granted an alias attachment.

p 204 - On petition of William Montgomery, assignee of David Bell vs Thomas Shockley, the process awarded plt. agst deft. was not executed, plt. by his attny granted a new process.

p 229 - At a Court held for Halifax County 16 October 1753
Present: James Terry, William Irby, Robert Wade and Hugh Moore, Gent. Justices

p 230 - Deed of land from William Atkinson to Richard Shockley acknowledged.

p 250 - In case of James Johnson and John Branch vs Thomas Shockley, the attachment awarded agst. deft.'s estate was not executed, plts. by their attny awarded an alias attachment.

p 257 - On petition of William Montgomery, assignee of David Bell, vs Thomas Shockley, the process awarded agst deft. was not executed, plt. by his attny. granted a new process.

p 278 - John Kerby appointed surveyor of road from the mouth of Snow Creek to Hickeys Road and John Hill, William Hill, John Adams, James Bobbit and his negro, Arthur Bearding, Richard Adkins, Richard Shockley, Major Adkison, Zechariah Doss, William Lucas, Charles Lucas, Richard Adams, James Shockley, Samuel Davis, Francis Kerby, William Lynch, William Bearding, John Kerby, Jr., and William Mullins to assist in keeping road in repair.

p. 286 -287 - James Johnson and John Branch vs Thomas Shockley, suit abates, deft. no inhabitant.

p.296 - William Montgomery, assignee of David Bell vs Thomas Shockley, suit abates, deft. no inhabitant.

p 324 - Lydia Atkinson, wife of William Atkinson, relinquished her right of dower to land conveyed to Richard Shockley.
