The Regicides, Whalley and Goffe Merriam Webster WWWebster Dictionary Main Entry: reg·i·cide Pronunciation: 're-j&-"sId Function: noun Etymology: Latin reg-, rex king + English -cide -- more at ROYAL Date: circa 1548 1 : one who kills a king 2 : the killing of a king - reg·i·ci·dal /"re-j&-'sI-d&l/ adjective Edward Whalley and his son-in-law, William Goffe, were among those who signed the death warrant (the document ordering the execution) of Charles I of England after the Royalists were defeated by the forces of Oliver Cromwell. When the restoration of royal rule occurred, Whalley and Goffe fled to the American colonies where they were hidden for the rest of their lives. My ancestor, Theophilus Whaley, though a fairly prominent man in Virginia in the 1670s, later moved to Rhode Island where he lead a modest, reclusive, and somewhat "mysterious" life. Some have believed him to be either Edward Whalley the regicide or Edward's brother, Robert, who is said to have been in the regiment that guarded Charles and participated in his execution.
