James Wesley Goad and
Olive Orabelle Wineland

James and Ollie and Kids

This a family photo from about 1891. The boy is Bert Irvine Goad. The other children are (from left to right): Lillian R., Nellie M., and Clinton Carric Goad.

James Wesley Goad settled in Liberty Township, Osborne County, Kansas in 1879. He was born 13 September 1857 in Corydon, Iowa and died 31 August 1916 in Osborne County Kansas. He is buried in the Cedar Bluff Cemetery in Osborne County. He was the son of James Isham Goad and Lydian Markham, grandson of Robert P. Goad and Julia A. Stephens, and great grandson of James M. Goad and Margaret Shockley.

James married Olive (Ollie) Orabelle Wineland on 4 March 1883. Ollie was the daughter of John Wineland and Jane Pearse and granddaughter of John Wineland and Mary Elder. She was born 24 December 1864 at Luin Grove, Pottowatomie County, Iowa and died 23 August 1945 at Sutherland, Nebraska.

When "Ollie" was 17, she was having a good time at a Mt. Ayr square dance. She was dancing with Jesse Howard who, with his brother Frank, was up from Tennessee to buy cattle. Two weeks later a sheriff's posse cornered the Howard brothers in the schoolhouse. Jesse and Frank jumped out the rear window and eluded capture. The sheriff

disclosed that Howard was an alias for James. That was how "little Ollie" discovered she'd been dancing with Jesse James.

James Wesley Goad received only a grade school education. He was a farmer and the couple belonged to the Victor Brethern Church.

Jim and Ollie Goad built a sod house about 1890 on their land three miles west, six miles north of Waldo, in Liberty Township. After it was completed, a steady stream of wagons was seen going to and from their home. On investigation, the sheriff found neighbors carrying Goad water home by the barrel. Many wells in early days produced only surface water, unpalitable and unsanitary. Jim and Ollie were happy to share with others less fortunate.

GENEALOGY’S MOST WANTED

Capture #27. Michael Goad posted his listing for his

2d Great-Grandmother, Olive WINELAND, and soon after was contacted by Robert Leach. Michael stated "I am looking at 20 pages copied from a family history that includes 6 NEW generations of my ancestory...and the story of my 3d Great-Grandparents...and a WINELAND descendants reunion." Robert Leach said "It was quite a thrill to see a name that I was familiar with my wife's side of the family and the Genealogy had already been compiled."

  • This help from Genealogy’s Most Wanted  was the major breakthough for me in my search for my Goad ancestry.  Robert Leach has since passed away. His identification of my “most wanted” was an important milestone in the chain of events that led to the creation of this Goad website.
