James Isham Goad and Lydia Catherine Markham

JAMES ISHAM GOAD, son of ROBERT GOAD and CAROLINE STEPHENS, was born January 19, 1822 in Civil District 5, White Co., TN1,2,3,4, and died October 06, 1873 in Monroe Township, Wayne County, Iowa5,6 .  He married LYDIA CATHERINE MARKHAM December 23, 1840 in White County, Tennessee7,8,9, daughter of NATHANIEL MARKHAM and MARY HENSLEY.  She was born December 30, 1821 in White County,Tennessee 10,11,12,13, and died April 07, 1885 in Victor Township, Osborne County, Kansas14.

James was orphaned before he was grown.  His mother died when he was four and his father when he was thirteen. After that, he lived for a time with relatives in White County, Tennessee

During the depression of 1836 - 1837, many people left Tennessee seeking land in newly opened areas.  In 1836, a large group left White and Warren counties for Illinois. In 1837 another large group left the area for Madison County, Arkansas.  Among them were families with the names Henderson, Combs, Counts, Goad, Franklin, Cantrell, Spurlock, Hayes, Driver, Woods, Drake, Bell, Eubanks, Dodson, Taylor, Logue, Webb, Lane, McCoy, Keck, Reeves, Wilmoth, Ledbetter, Elsey, Stephens, Madewell and others.

One account has James accompanying his family to Arkansas and later returning to White County, Arkansas.  Another account says that when the family left, James refused to leave.  He was working for Nathaniel Markham, the father of  the girl he was in love with, Lydia.

James and Lydia Goad stayed in White County, Tennessee until 1850.  James worked from “kin to kain’t: ... from the time that it’s light enough you “kin” see until you “kain’t” see any more.  He didn’t believe in slavery and couldn’t afford a slave if he did.  Neither  the Goads nor other non-slave holding farming families could compete with the slave labor of wealthier families in White County, such as Daniel Clark, who owned 30 families of slaves, used to farm the land, make furniture and coffins, and as contract labor to others.

In 1850, James, Lydia and their children traveled north into Illinois along with others.  Some of the families in their party were named Clark, Vance, Markham, Shepard, Jenkins, Harris Bradshaw and Lincoln.  Many advertisements had been circulating for land in the north. One read:

Attention emigrants and the Public in general is called to the rapidly improving city of Fountain Green, Illinois.  Superior farming lands are just outside the town.  40, 80, and 160 acres from 8 cents to 12 cents an acre.  The town is rapidly expanding and needs mechanics, merchants, and professions of all kinds.
Signed by Jonas Johns and included a map showing
                                                      thirty streets and fifteen avenues.

The property sold feverously through the mail.  Lydia’s brother, Jasper, bought 40 acres.  James and Lydia decided to wait until they got there to buy.

When the party got to Fountain Green, they found that, instead of thirty streets and fifteen avenues, there was one street.  There was a post office, livery stable, a store, and a run-down hotel.  The only person who had heard of Jonas Johns was the postmaster and he hadn’t seen Johns in six months.

Instead of land or town lots, people found themselves holding worthless receipts.  Since Lydia’s brother, Jasper, was in that situation, both families lived together. Initially, they lived in a half-faced camp of logs rolled up to provide shelter on three sides, with an open fire on the fourth to warm them and to keep the animals out.

Jim Goad and Jasper Markham and their oldest sons hired out as labor, getting about 50 cents an acre for breaking prairie land and $2.00 a hundred  for cutting rails, hauling them and building fences.  They hunted and traded furs for staples in the village.

James and Lydia resided in Fountain Green Township, Hancock county, Illinois, through 1855.  James Goad was assessed taxes for the years 1853 to 1855.  Their nearest neighbors are said to have been Mordecai and (Abraham or James) Lincoln, close relatives of the future president (nephews or cousins).

In 1856, they moved on to Iowa, where James purchased eighty acres at $1.25 an acre in Appanoose County, Iowa which soon became Monroe Township, Wayne County, Iowa (land patent #14665 recorded Chariton, Iowa).  Jim built a big double log cabin, with puncheoned floors, chinked walls and efficient doors and windows.

Neither James nor his sons, Vance Carrick and Nathaniel Perry Goad, were accepted when they

tried to enlist in the Union Army.  The reason given was that they were “too southern in their beliefs.  The family suffered some persecution during the war as “copperheads.”  In time, this passed.

James died in Wayne County, Iowa without a will.  Ava Rockwell was appointed administrator of the estate and J. W. Freeland guardian of the minor children (Probate Deeds of Wayne County, Iowa, Corydon, Record D, pages 508, 523, 527; Docket E, pages 5 and 10).  In January, 1875, part of the land was sold to W. E. Shaw to pay debts against the estate.  In 1879, Lydia sold the rest of the land and moved to Kansas with most of her married and unmarried children.

In the spring of 1879, a wagon train was organized of families desiring to take advantage of the homestead law that had been passed in 1862 for Kansas.  As it moved through Iowa

from the southeast part of the sate, the families of Dodge, Moye, Weaver, Aiken, Hall, and Slater were already a part.  The Kuhn, Slason, and Gibbs families pulled into line at Bloomfield. Other families joined the migration as the wagons rolled through Iowa; at Conterville, Harris, Mansfield, Wood and Wells; at Seymour, the Vances; at Genoa, the Balm, Goad, Shepard, Clark and Markhams; at Clio, the Mauks and McNeals; and at Leon, the Jolly, Bradshaw, and Bronsons.  At St. Joseph, Missouri, the Cobb, Grantham, Bell, Withrow, Drake, Boyd, Henderson, Wilson, Norton, Phillips, Williams, Beesley, Lane, Martin and Knowles families swelled the ranks of the travelers.  At Independence, the Taylor, Ewing, Mann, Webb, Davidson, McCoy and Allen families were waiting to travel with them.  Many of the people on the wagon train had come from Tennessee in earlier years.

At the end of the trip, in Osborne County, Kansas, the Goad families filed claims.  Lydia and her children, Carrick, Martha, Jeff, James, Mary and Lewis raised their families in Osborne County and died there.
